J: OK, welcome Steven to our show. I heard that you will publish your new books, and I heard that would be a series of books; please tell something about your new books. Do they have something special?

S: Of course they have something special. These books might be the first interactive books ever. Because we take advantage of the Internet totally, we set up the online teams where people can find friends who share the common interest, and after reading the books, certainly you can sign on HJenglish.com and find a lot of friends who is also willing to practice their spoken English. And also you can get involved in offline activities, let’s say, an English corner, you may have been there, and English salon. That can definitely help people to improve their spoken English and interpersonal skills for real. I think that'll be quite fun, since traditionally, books are just the books, they are published stuff and dead. The contents cannot be renewed. Even though you can have a revised edition published, it will be quite a while later. But as for my books, those who read them and join in the online teams are discussing about it and adding new stuff as well, which is the most enjoyable part of the whole reading process. Everybody might be the author of the books and I’m the editor-in-chief.

J: That’s really fun. I'm curious about how you make the books interactive?

S: You know, the readers will be given some url addresses. Of course, they can log on my blog, interact with me, and can also send me emails. Furthermore, we have those online teams, which can be very personal and very unique online experience for those readers. They can talk with each other in English; they can also share a lot of materials with each other online. So that's what we called Interactive.

  J:那真的很有意思。我很好奇你怎么能让书“互动”?

  S:我们会给读者提供一些URL地址,当然,他们可以登录到我的博客和我互动,也可以给我写email。另外,我们有在线小组,我们的小组对读者来说会是一种独特的体验。他们可以用英语互相交流,他们可以和别人分享很多材料,这就是我们说的“互动”。

J: I knew that you have published the book named Give Me Five. This time how different will the new books be?

S: As you mentioned, Give Me Five is a very interesting way for English learners to practice their spoken English. It is one book in Steven interactive foreign language study series. And my idea is like this, the fixed sentence patterns in English are kind of limited, let’s say from 20 -35. They are all included in the book. Speaking English by using those sentence patterns can help to improve the fluency of your language. Those basic sentence patterns build up the structure of your spoken English, and we need the structure first.

At the same time, you need various idiomatic expressions to fill in the structure. That's what I write about in 365 spoken English. In this book, people can find a lot of daily expressions they may know how to say in Chinese, but can hardly make it come across in English.

  J:Yeah, that will be useful.

S:And another book is called topic 20. We offer 20 the hottest topics. We talk about Liu Xiang, we also talk about pollution, which is a very serious problem in China, we also talk about the internet and plastic surgery, we talk about star endorsement and 超女,super girls and boys whatsoever. An interesting thing you may notice is that even though some people have a good command of English, they’re still not good English speakers. The major reason is their ideas. They don’t know how to come up with ideas. Usually people of this kind are sort of boring to talk with. I don’t want to be that kind of person. I suggest that people should learn to be interesting people with ideas. People like to make friends with fun people. Then you’ll have more chances to talk. Only in this way, can your English be improved.

J: Yeah, so you offer topics.

S: Yeah, a lot of topics, you know as for daily conversation, the topics are concerned about the hottest issues. If you cannot talk a lot about the hottest topics, you can hardly cut in any conversation people are having. So that's the biggest problem ---the ideas. Even though you pop out some single words, that’s Ok because they are understandable, but if you don't have any ideas, you’ll find nothing to say. People won’t talk with those who stay mute all the time. No matter how much you study English, that will still be a big obstacle on the way. That's the reason why I promote this idea. I design this debate section, because people need some supporting ideas and you also need some negative points of view to make the debate go on. Then you can go through additional materials we offer in the book and come up with some ideas on your own, which is the process of thinking. That's why I write this book. I hope that people express their ideas, by using sentence patterns in Give Me Five and the very idiomatic expressions in 365 Spoken English.

J: Some people always say when they meet somebody they don't know what they can talk with these people. First hello, and the weather, then goodbye.

S: Yeah, that’s a very common formula for average people. Most people have this problem. You can find out every time you come over to the English corner, you are repeating yourself, you are talking about the same thing, the weather, your favorite movies, the hobby, your school, your work, your educational background, and your hometown and your family. After that, you can hardly say anything. People have told me that it is really hard to get into the native speaker's mind; maybe you can just be a say-hello acquaintance, but never a close friend. You don't know them, you can't express yourself. You seem to have nothing to say. You are not interesting people. If you are not an interesting people, people won't like you.

J: Some people always ask "if I want to improve oral English, are there any good textbooks", do you think your new books can be text books?

S: Text books, on my god, I used to use my 5 sentence pattern in my own classes. It is really popular, and a lot of students like it. I'm thinking about putting it into a text book or something, but I don't want students to take it seriously, because once you have this book as a text book, people will feel bored about it. So you never call it a text book, but you can use it as a text book. I think it's a very good supplement to the text books the students already have, so try to find it in your bookstores.

J: OK, I will. Now let's talk something about you. I've heard that you have never been abroad.

S: Yeah, that’s right, I think it is a shame.

  J:好的,我会的。现在让我们来谈谈你吧,我听说你从没有出过国。

  S:对,我想那很遗憾。

J: Some people say they can't learn English well because they don't have the language environment, what do you think of it?

S: Actually I didn't have English speaking environment, either. I think the most important thing is practice. Even though you can't find any foreigners on campus or in your working place, you still can find some partners. And I was lucky though. When I was in school, as the fresh man, I bumped into a very nice post-graduate student.

  J:很多人说,他们学不好英语是因为没有语言环境,你怎么看待这个问题呢?

  S:事实上我也没有语言环境。我觉得最重要的是练习。即使你在学校里或者工作的地方找不到老外,你仍然可以找到一些伙伴。我很幸运我在学校里还是新生的时候,我遇见了一个非常好的研究生。

  J: A lady?

S: Yeah, she is a lady. She is also a very good English speaker. At that time, I felt like I had a very strong passion to speak English. But I couldn’t find anyone who spoke better English than I did. She is the one. That's why we started this partnership. Each time we met on campus, we talked in English. I mean you have to capture any possible chance to speak English, and then you find out that it will be paid off.

  J:一个女生?

  S:对,是个女生。她的英语非常好。那时,我觉得我有一股说英语的热情,但是我很难找到英语比我说的好的人。她就是一个。所以我们成了伙伴。每次我们在校园遇见,我们都用英语交流。我想你应该抓住任何说英语的机会,然后你就会发现那都是值得的。

J: But some people are worried that maybe two Chinese students always speak Chinglish, not English.

S: Chinglish? It really doesn't matter. You are not just speaking English with this single person. You've been watching movies, you've been watching TV, you've been listening to American songs, and sometimes you can meet some American friends. And those are helping you guys to strengthen your grammatical structures and the sense of English. Talking to a Chinese English speaking partners is only a small part of your whole study, so I don't have those worries.

  J:但是一些人担心两个中国学生在一起说的可能不是地道的英语,而是中式英语。

  S:中式英语?我不在乎这个。你并不是只和这一个人交谈。你看电影,看电视,听英文歌曲,有些时候你可能会有美国朋友。这些都会帮助你加强你的语法结构和语感。和中国朋友说英语只是整个学习的一小部分,所以我没有这些担心。

J:So that's just a chance to speak English, do you care about mistakes you may make?

S: Certainly there are some Chinglish expressions you may fail to understand, but at that time we could explain to each other," Am I right?" "Am I doing this right?" Or "you can help me with some expressions." You know, when two Chinese are talking with each other, the best thing is that you can always have the Chinese explanation. Another thing I find interesting is that after you start to work you feel like there are so many accents around the world, which sometimes may sound like an alien to you, Chinese English, and Singlish, which is supposed to be Singaporean English, and Korean English, Japanese English, and we have Indian English, which is totally hard to understand. But you have to get use to people from different nations and different cultures. So talking with Chinese people can also help you to improve your listening comprehension definitely. You have to get used to different accents. so I think talking with your Chinese friends is another part of study.

  J: It’s an useful experience.

S: Yes, useful experience for you, for your listening comprehension.

  J:这是个有用的经验。

  S:对,对你和你的听力都是有用的经验。

说英语就没有害怕的理由!

J: What do you think about the vocabulary and grammar things? Some people don't dare to speak English just because they don't know how to express themselves or they think their grammar is poor.

S: I think it's ridiculous to have ideas like this. We are talking to two different kinds of people, Chinese and non-Chinese. When you are talking to Chinese, The Chinese people don't have the right to laugh at you. Because they are non-native speakers, they also make a lot of mistakes. Even though they are famous TV program hosts and public speakers, they make some mistakes, even on CCTV-9. So there is no reason to be afraid of being laugh that. Another kind of persons we are talking to are foreigners, some are native speakers for sure. Of course they can't laugh at you, either, because they are native speakers, English is their mother tongue. We won't laugh at any Chinese speakers from other countries, right? Even if we feel funny about it, we laugh in a nice and polite way. It is very acceptable for them to make silly mistakes in their daily conversation or whatsoever. So those are two kinds of persons we are talking to in the world, either of them don't have the right to laugh at you, why do you feel like being afraid of being laughed at? I think it's ridiculous.

J: So don't be afraid, just speak out.

S: Yeah, speak out aloud, it's really important.

  J:所以无需害怕,说出来。

  S:对,大声说出来,这很重要。

J: I knew that you have a column called 365 English, now you put materials from some TV shows like Prison break into it. Do you think we can learn real English from TV shows and movies?

S: I think one of the fun things about 365 English is that people find it hard to express themselves in a very idiomatic way most of the time. Obviously there’re a lot of hot phrases right now in Chinese, but when you want to put them in English, you will find that it is very hard to do it in a proper way, like, “魔鬼身材”、“无可奉告”、“天使脸庞”、“轻一点儿”、“你出卖我”、“胡言乱语”、“你给我听好了”、“刚才我们说到哪儿了?”.There are a lot of expressions like this in our daily life.

That's why I've been watching a lot of American sitcoms and dramas, in which you can find interesting expressions people can use in our daily life.

J: When you watch TV shows and movies, how can you know that's the expression?

S: Mostly I can understand the lines, so I have a very good listening comprehension. So no matter what kind of expressions they use even though they are new to me, I can just drop down the words, and look it up in a dictionary and find out about the meaning. For those who cannot understand the lines, it is better to watch the shows with scripts, subtitles. After watching the shows, you review the scripts and find out what you have missed out previously. You memorize those expressions and watch the shows repeatedly and use them with friends and then you’ll never forget.

  J:当你看电视剧和电影的时候,你怎么知道那就是个表达法呢?

  S:大多数时候我明白台词,我的听力很好,所以无论他们用什么样的表达,即使是新的,我能记下这些词然后在字典中查出它们的意思。对那些不太理解台词的朋友来说,我觉得最好看节目的时候看剧本,字幕。在看过节目之后,可以回顾剧本看看你错过了什么。你记住这些表达法看完电影后使用它们和你的朋友交谈,你就永远不会忘。

J: Yeah, but maybe average people like me, the first thing we care about is the story not the words.

S: That's OK. You’ve got to have the environment, to feel like the sense of English. Whether you believe it or not, when you are watching American movies or American TVs, you may feel like you are a whole new person. Because when you are talking in English, your grammar and your expressions are different than your Chinese. Suppose I can be a very shy person in Chinese, which is obviously not true, but when I'm talking in English, I can be very open. You know those are the interesting things about languages. Maybe English is a kind of open language. I think that's what people need to find out. It's a real fun.

  J: Maybe I can try.

  S: Yeah, I think so.

  J:也许我可以尝试一下。

  S:我觉得可以的。
