Many people would claim that genius equals to talent, to supernova, and to record-breaker.  ‘Talent’ means that these geniuses are born to be superior to other drivers.  Formula 1 drivers, for sure, are far more talented than common speculators, yet there is genius in geniuses. Another word ‘supernova’ indicates these geniuses having splendid early age of their business. Being applauded, these boys appeared on the front page of sport newspaper, known by many people who do not concern too much about racing, and become the hero of a fairy tale. Turning to ‘record-breaker’, it is a stage which these talented young drivers mature enough to compare to some great names as Fangio and Senna. Record itself is passed by in this way.

In my list of most talented drivers, you can see Raikkonen, Alonso, Hamilton and Vettel. Three of them had become world champions and the last one is also champion of Italian GP. All of them achieved highly success in an early age (that is often emphasized), and broke the record of ‘the youngest driver to…’  His way, from Formula Renault to Formula 1 directly being repeated, Raikkonen become a prototype of zooming up. And he is still among the best drivers, majority of whom entered F1 by racing in GP2, F3…. Alonso ended the dynasty of Schumacher, and he shows his driving ability in today’s Renault, a struggling team.  ‘I want to drive for McLaren,’ 8-year-old Hamilton told Ron Dennis, and he did it. Though still criticized about his driving style, the Briton is no doubt talented, for a mediocrity would not become a world champion competitor in the first year of entering F1.  I know few anecdotes about Vettel, but great Michael Schumacher enjoys his company even when take part in football match, it can tell something.

Compared with top 4 of the drivers’ ranking of these two years, one was left: Felipe Massa. Despite he is one of my favourite drivers; Massa is not a well-known genius as those being mentioned above. When his peers, Raikkonen and Alonso were already powerful title competitors, the Brazilian was still racing for Sauber(in 2003 he became the test driver of Ferrari,it is the only experience in a top team).  During that time, he was merely an ordinary driver, and if nothing had been changed he would have been the same kind of driver as Ricardo Zonta. But to people’s surprise, he became stronger and stronger and showed the potential of being a superb driver. In 2006, joining Ferrari, he played an auxiliary role quite well. In this year, he overcame difficulty; though pitifully lose the title, his name is now among those of the best drivers.

Although being a top driver, Massa is still not a genius. Strange enough, geniuses who mentioned above have a common place, that is, unique way of dealing with the corner: Kimi cornering by edging a calculated line; Fernando making the full use of tyre, which style was more manifest when using Michelin; Hamilton locking up his front wheels and keeping rear ones rolling, in order to keep a high speed to pass the apex. Felipe’s cornering, however, does not have unique character. After discussing a part of driving style, racing in the rain, which topic I had never avoid is to be talk over.  I have watched the Australian GP of 1991, which is the shortest GP in the history of F1. Driving flawless in the downpour, the race leader,Senna, waved his right arm in an elegant way to urge the supervisors to suspend the accident filled race. Obviously Massa does not reach such a level.

However, should the winner be a genius? Of course not. For one hand, genius means sparse, and if only talented raced and others companied, the race would have no reason to exist; For another hand, the only chance to become a champion is born to be genius, which is an assumption extremely unfair.

Take two world champions for instance: Niger Mansell got the title in his 40s.  Obviously, rather untalented than unfortunate should be used to describe his career.  And Niki Lauda, triple champion, paid for his race in his rookie years. No team regarded him as the potential excellent driver, otherwise they would not put him in the embarrass dilemma. Talented drivers though they are not, experienced drivers they are indeed. Their title is the proof of their driving skill.

What really matters is that how much one can obtain during the racing years. The whole potential ability of a driver is as the capacity of a bottle, and the present one is as the amount of water in the bottle. Being talented merely equals to some water is already in, and perhaps can be filled more quickly; whether this bottle will always have more water than others is hard to tell.  By keep filling in, an empty bottle can be the fullest one at last. More over, as the commonsense, the capacity of the container has no relationship with the primer amount of liquid. A fuller container always means less room for more liquid.

Is cornering of the most importance among sectors of driving skills? It is important, but not the most important. Those special cornering styles are formed in an early age, each of them is unique and difficult to be imitated. A strange gesture of playing tennis was practiced by a thousand people, 99.9% lost, and only one has successed: Rafa Nadal.  Such unique skills may not proper for all drivers; otherwise they had already been the basic skills. When discussing about Massa, though his cornering is somewhat common, his tempo of the whole lap is outstanding. So the Brazilian made numbers of flying laps in qualifying this year. Compared with running, where frequency and movement are both important, cornering and tempo can lead to the same effect when driving.

Senna’s perform in the rain, which I have seen is in his 30s. Born in 1960, Senna had already a master of wet race in 1984, according to some race reports, which conclusion was drew by several wet races that year. Schumacher, as well, shared the same character. However, it should be well considered that: firstly, Senna’s skill must have developed in these 5 to 6 years; secondly, his McLaren well performanced in the damp weather. Thus,Senna’s elegant laps in Adelaide cannot be the criterion.

Wet race,as the toughest of all time, even the Professor Alain Prost dislike it. The performance in the rain is highly related with the car. Every one had fallen down in the rain, sometimes we should admit our carelessness, and sometimes that the wrong chosen of shoes is to blame. I think no one would suspect the way he walked for so many years. Since an adult who walks so well can easily slip in the shower, making mistake in the rain is nothing strange. We cannot tell that a driver has a poor ability of wet racing by only several races or even several his worst race. Massa did a poor job in Silverstone, his Ferrari had serious problem, so he spun two times on the same middle-speed corner( similar to the one where Timo Glock been passed by Hamilton in Brazil); worse still, ever Nakajima in a slow Williams could push him to the damp part of the circuit. But compared with Massa’s job in Monte Carlo, where another Felipe was racing: what is his error was that spin, not fatal; actually it is the poor manoeuvre of Ferrari that cost his extra points. His rival, Hamilton suffered a puncture. Luckily the very place is so near to the pitlane, the Briton did not lose too much time on it. Massa’s performance in Monaco, if not better, is as good as Hamilton. However, in my opinion, no driver can reach the same level of Schumacher and Senna now, and those splendid races of wet-race masters are still targets for drivers at present.

Thus, as unnecessary for special cornering and wet-race skill which is still out of reach, as well other matters, what is the genius doing better? And why Ferrari chose Massa who not a genius?

The word which I have left for describing genius is POTENTIAL. It may lead to a confused definition, for driving is learnt postnatal, and potential of developing driving skill in an early age is just TALENT I have definited.  When reached the F1 stage, drivers’ ability of further driving skill development is based on their potential of further study.  The potential is the reason of Ferrari’s chooses. The Maranello based team sure that Massa will become better by some amendment of driving, for he had show some characters which can make him successful: one is brave, which is appreciated by Enzo Ferrari; another is assiduous, which is necessary for becoming a great driver, whether he is a genius or not. Driving beside Schumacher, Massa learnt much of how to dealing with the different kinds of situation of driving. As a tutor Schumacher did his job, the rest is for Massa to learn by himself. It is obvious that he improved so much in 2008 than in 2007. Take Turkish GP for instance. Massa is a tough driver, and perhaps he would fight against Hamilton till the end when in former years; on the contrast, he let him pass. In fact, disregard the losing of face and try another way to protect his car, what seemed to me is a progress of the Brazilian,at the same time,a sign of mature. Unfortunately, his title slipped away on the last lap;but in my heart,he deserves it,for every progress we have found in his races.

Geniuses dream in colours, when others dream in black and white. One of those who are not genius, uses his crayon to colour a more splendid scenery appeared in his dream, day after day,he did it. Felipe, we are all keen to see your coloured dream in 2009.
