"The Widder just looked at the hard old man wonderin what made an old man`s thorny."

"Money is real serious business like churchin, and I`m like the money preacher, yeh, the money preacher, got that?"

Old man Willie looked down at his papers and started singing "standing on the promises of……

ummmmmm, ummmmmm, standing on the promises, standing on the promises, standing on the promises, A-M-E-N! UMMMMM, UMMMMMMMM."

All that ummmmmmm ummmmmming was cause he didn`t know all them words, truth was he didn`t know much of nothin bout churchin or church songs cause he didn`t go to church cept for funerals and that was Bank business cause that`s when he did a lot of foreclosin on widders and orphans when their old daddys died.

"Why you got to be so mean Uncle Willie, my Pa was yourn only brother and i`m yourn own neice."

"No kin of mine! Your Pa weren`t no full brother to me, ca-ni-ven Mr. Goody-two-shoes. He done sweet talked my old Momma and Pa into adoptin him and then he ca-ni-ved to get half of everthang what was rightfully all mine! Pure criminality takin somethin not rightfully yours. All mine and i weren`t supposed to share!"

"Pa weren`t no ca-ni-ver!"

"Were too! I be the flesh-n-blood and it was M-I-N-E, but he got half and didn`t deserve it, didn`t deserve being my brother, didn`t deserve being my partner in this here bank!"

"He was a mighty good man and a mighty good banker!"

"Yeh, good alright, good to ever noaccount lazy bum never wanted to work in this Hollar! That`s why they came to him."

"Aint right Uncle Willie, you talkin bout my Pa that away!"

"GOD`S TRUTH! If it weren`t for me, he`d never foreclose on nobody`s place, always giving my money away……and look at you, what did he do for you?" Goose hockey! Giving you that Trust Fund made you a lazy no good dreamer, and that no good lazy husband of yours, a songwriter, hu, my fat pe-toot-ie.

嗯,my fat pe-toot-ie!

"Its my Trust Fun and my muney, fair and square, anyway, my Bub almost sold him a song, lots of times!"

"Yeh, don`t expect me to change my mind and don`t you expect me to molly-coddle you by slipping you a five or ten, crackpot notion if you think i`m going give you anything. See all this money,"the old man pulled a wad out of his pocket that would choke a horse,"be easy for me to give you some, get you out of here," he waved the money in the Widder`s face,"but i aint going to do the easy thing cause you need to learn a grownup`s lesson."

"Please Uncle Willie, please,I need your help, we`re starvin."

"I am in charge of the money and I say no, N-O, find yourself another man to take care of you and make sure he`s better than the last one! Now get on out of here and let a busy man get back to work fore I call Sheriff Lockburn on you. I got papers to fill out, this Hollar aint nothin but full of deadbeats just like you and i`m going to put them off my property before Christmas morning!"

"Please Uncle Willie, please help me."

"I told you I anit no real uncle of your`n, i`m Mr.Willie Saul Gizzard HIMSELF,please and thank you,and folks like you should start showin me the respect I`m due and call me by my respected name!"

"I guess I aint gointo get no muney?"

"I guess you aint!"

"Uncle Willie,if my Pa were alive……"

"Goose hockey! Your Pa is dead and molding in the grave and he aint never going to be alive to bother me n-o m-o-r-e, hall-a-lu-yah, God finally got somethin right!"

"That aint respectfull Uncle Willie."

"See them shoes," old man Willie lifted up his leg and ploped his shoe on the desk."Them were Jonathan`s fancy shoes, but I`m awearin them now and he be walkin bare foot in hell for all the bad things he done to me in life, so don`t you be thinking your Pa was better than me, s-e-e, i`m as good as its ever goina get from now on out, cause i`m alive and he`s dead and i aint too sorry for that. Now get on out of here and stop dressin in man`s clothes, you`re makein a laughin stock out of decent women! "

The Widder took Bub`s rifle and drug herself out of her Uncle`s office, out the bank`s front door, across the snow filled street over to the General Store.Salt water tears of grief were afreezin on her sweet little cheeks.Maybe everybody was right and she couldn`t make it without another old man, but she didn`t love nobody but Bub and all them old men been parading in front of her since old Bub croaked weren`t no marrying material let alone love material, but maybe they were right and if she had another old man her family wouldn`t be hungry. Man was it hard fer a young Widder woman with children to make it on her own.

She counted all her regrets as she trugged through the snow across the street to old man Polly`s General Store, old man Polly was her last chance. The store was happy, from the front door jingle bells soundin like Santie Claw`s sleigh acomin to the big decorated spruce pine Christmas tree, smelin sweet with burning candles and homemade candy and cookie decorations.

"Howdy Brother Polly, been busy this Christmas?" The Widder tried to smile, wipeing them tears away, getting past her misery.

"Not par-tic-ur-ly Mister, hard times all around." Old Brother Polly looked busy, but everbody in the place knew he weren`t.

"Uh,Brother Polly it`s me, Huneysuckel Lockslee," she pulled off  Bub`s old hat as Brother Polly finally looked at her in the face,"excuse me mam." She smiled hopefully, "suppose you could advance me some chicken and Christmas mornin toys fer a little time till i gets my Uncle Willie Saul to give me some of my Trust Fun muney, like usual." Widder Lockslee pulled Bub`s old pant`s up like she was gettin ready to load up.

"Nope, can`t do that right now."Old man Polly tried to look busy again, lookin at everthang cept the Widder in the face.

"I got muney in the bank, just cant get it out right now."

"Miss Huneysuckel, you know i`d do anything fer you, sure would, but your Uncle done told me to cut you off cause he aint goina give you nothin, understand Missie?" Aint me, I just gota do what that old man wants, he`s got my loan and you know what he`d do if i went against him, besides all he wants you to do is get hitched up and it don`t matter what old man you get just so you and your Uncle`s good graces is just one measly old man." Old Brother Polly offered his excuses and advice, tryin to look busy, hopeing he wouldn`t have to look the Widder in the eyes again.

"Brother Polly, I`m at my ropes end, please help me." She put her hand on  Brother Polly`s

shoulder,"please, I`m abeggin, cause my children are starvin."

"Miss Huneysuckel Mam, I caint, so don`t make me say it again, only thang I can do is pray for you findin a man." Old Brother Polly was a big church muk-i-dee-muk and his boy was apracticin fer the pull-pit-ture so that prayin part was a natural fer him, besides it was cheaper than doin somethin nice.

The Widder looked around at her neighbors, but they conviently looked the other way. Man was she hurting, she looked in the hardware corner of the store at the chichens with their heads poked out of their crates just clucking away and she could sure smell the gravy and then the Widder eyed them store bought dollies over to the toy section just sittin neat and pretty on the shelves, thinkin how and good they`d look in her children`s stockings, she could hear them children laughing.

The Widder was sick to her stomach, that’s what she were. If only things were different, if "only" were nice old uncles instead of means ones, man oh man, if only dead husbands were alive. Miss Huneysuckel knew when she was scratching on hardscrabble, old Brother Polly weren`t goina cut her no slack, no sir and weren`t no love in her future just the slavery of being hitched to some old man she never loved just to please everbody. Her heart was stone cold dead.

The Widder just turned around and went outdoors again, mercy it was so cold and she was so low down. She looked up and down the street then chimbed over the piled up snow and headed for Tall Tommy`s Texaco.
