Ø   What do  you do ?     你是做什么的

     例:A:I Work for an international orporation .What do you do ?

             B:I'm unemployed.

Ø   That does it! 受够了

例:That does it .You have been late for all of  our dates .

           I don't want to go out with  you anymore .

     例:That does it !  I 've had enough of that dog barking and waking me up in the middle  of the night . I 'm calling the owner. 

Ø   blow something away 把什么给彻底击垮

例:The invention of the telephone blow away all other methods of communication

例:Our soccer team got blown away in the final

Ø   lay one's hand on something 得到某样东西

例:Amamda wants to lay her hand on a new car, but she can't afford one now.

例:I need you lay my hand on last month's financial report where can I find it?

Ø   tip off    暗中通信
E.g.(1)Someone tipped off the police that the thief was hiding in the garage .
(2)The spy was tipped off that the secret meeting would be held in London

Ø   in person    亲自做什么
E.g.(1)You can register for classes over the phone or in person .
(2)Liz is a great friend .She came to my house to wish me a happy birthday in person

Ø   hold somebody or something back    干扰,阻挠,妨碍
E.g.(1)My parents are always very supportive .They never hold me back from following my dreams .
   (2)The fear of flying holds some people back from traveling

Ø   wind down    放松
E.g. (1)I want to go on holiday and wind down.

(2)Around Christmas the company’s business winds down a lot

Ø   put somebody down    指责某人
E.g.(1)My friends were putting me down at school today .
(2)Evelyn sometimes puts people down behind their backs

Ø   a grand time    非常愉快的时光
E.g.(1)We had a grand time in Hawaii last year .
(2)I hope you have a grand time on your vacation

Ø   never enter someone’s mind    从来就没有想过
E.g.(1)It would never enter my mind to leave my job .
(2)Before meeting her it never entered my mind to get married

Ø   routine  惯例,常规的
E.g.I go to the doctor for a routine check-up each year

Ø   detox   戒酒/毒
E.g.(1)After the party last night .I feel I need to detox for a bit .
(2)He was getting very sick ,so his doctor advised a detox period

Ø   pitch in 投入到(加入到)……中帮助sb

eg:1.We all pitched in to help our mom with the dinner.让我们一起帮妈妈做饭吧.

  2.If you could pitch in a little,we’d be finished quicker.

Ø   work sth out 达成共识

eg:1.We need to work out the final details about this contract.我们需要把合同的最后细节在确认一下.

   2.A;Where to go on holiday this year?   今年去哪度假?

     B:We hanen’t worked out.

Ø   be up to sth做好准备

eg:1.Since the accident he’s not up to moving around too much.自从事故以来,他还不能动弹得太多.

  2.I feel I’m up to the challenge

Ø   sleepover (小孩)在朋友家过夜的晚会

eg:1.My parents are letting me have a sleepover for my birthday.我父母为我生日准备了晚会.

   2.I think my younger sister still too young for sleepover parties.

Ø   ay bad stuff about sb对sb 不友好

eg:1.She was saying bad stuff about me to my boss.她对我很不友好在老板面前说我坏话.

  2.I won’t say bad stuff about you ,if you’ll be nice to me

Ø   ollback机构精简,裁员

eg:1.Because of the big losses last year there are gonna have to be rollbacks.由于去年亏损大将会有机构精简.

   2.Hopefully not too many people will lose their jobs due to the rollbacks

Ø   want to much  想要的东西太多了,要求太高

eg:  1.My teachers always want too much from me in class.

2.My girlfriend  wants too much from our relationshi

Ø   check/check out:look at them(一般是非常美好的事物)

eg:(1)He spends all his time in cafes checking out girls.

(2)I was trying to be subtle ,but the girl at the bar caught me checking her out

Ø   be hospitable    友好,好客的
E.g.(1)Tourists often say that Canadians are very hospitable people .
(2)If you want to be hospitable ,you should make sure your guests are always comfortable .
Ø   busted    逮到
E.g.(1)My parents busted me getting home at 3 in the morning after that big party .
(2)The police busted several teenagers stealing in a supermarket .

Ø   bogus    假的,伪造的
E.g.(1)Don’t believe all the news you read .Some of it can be bogus .
(2)The internet is able to be used to hide a lot of bogus companies .

Ø   get nailed    被痛打或身体受伤害
E.g.(1)When I used to play rugby I’d get nailed almost every game .
(2)Alex got nailed in a pub by a big guy because he was caught checking out the guy’s girlfriend

Ø   get the hang of something    学会做什么
E.g.(1)I hate maths class because I can’t get the hang of geometry .
(2)It only took me a couple of hours to get the hang of how to use our new computer

Ø   dismissed    允许走了或开除
E.g.The teacher dismissed us all once we’d finished the exercises

Ø   prom    舞会(通常指比较正式的)
E.g.(1)At the end of each year there’s always a prom right before high school graduation .
(2)I’m not sure who’s going to be my date for the prom

Ø   urn out    发生,发展
E.g.(1)It turned out that we didn’t have our test today as the teacher was sick .
(2)I didn’t like him at first but he turned out to be a really nice guy

Ø   bag someone    不公正的批评某人
E.g.(1)After he missed a goal ,Beckham was bagged by his coach after the match .
(2)My teacher’s always bagging to my parents about my bad grades

Ø   ld man    爸爸
E.g.(1)My old man works as a lawyer .
(2)The old man doesn’t like it when I get home late

Ø   have enough brains to do something    有足够的头脑做什么
E.g.(1)He doesn’t have enough brains to get into Cambridge .
(2)I think he’s got enough brains to be a politician

Ø   payoff    补偿金
E.g.(1)He got a payoff for leaving the company before retirement .
(2)They gave him a payoff for keeping quiet

Ø  drill    演习,排练
E.g. We’ve gone through the drill a hundred times

Ø   team up    和某人组成一队,结伙
E.g.(1)I teamed up with a few friends to travel to Xinjiang .
(2)The two companies have teamed up to develop a new computer program

Ø   food chain    食物链,阶层,阶级
E.g.(1)He’s just joined the company ,so he’s low down the food chain .
(2)Next year I’ll be top of the food chain at highschool

Ø   odds    运气
E.g.(1)At the casino he’s always careful to bet with the odds .
(2)The odds are always against him when he plays cards

Ø   update    什么更新,最新消息
E.g. I’ve got to give my boss an update tomorrow

Ø   stick with somebody /something    支持某人/继续做什么事情
E.g.(1)I’ll stick with your decision on this issue .
(2)I hope you’ll stick with this job until next year

Ø   civilian    平民
E.g.(1)Before joining the army he was an accountant in civilian life .
(2)Civilians are always very vulnerable in conflict zones

Ø   private person    喜欢安静的人,内向的人
E.g.(1)Some film stars can actually be very private people

Ø   have a hard time with something    做什么事情很煎熬,很痛苦
E.g. I’m having a hard time with my algebra classes

Ø   dispose    丢弃,扔掉
E.g.(1)I haven’t disposed of the rubbish yet .

Ø   whereabouts    地方所在,位置
E.g.(1)Do you know the whereabouts of the restaurant we’re going to ?
(2)The whereabouts of my camera remains a mystery
