As is well known (to us), books teach us to learn life, truth, science and many other useful things. They increase our knowledge, broaden our minds and strengthen our character. In other words, they are our good teachers and wise friends. This is the reason why our parents always encourage us to read more books.

Reading is a good thing, but we must pay great attention to the choice of books. It is true that we can get benefits from good books. However, bad books will do us more harm than good.

众所周知，书籍教我们学习人生，真理，科学以及其它许多有用的东西。它们增加我们的知识，扩大我们的心胸并强化我们的品格。换句话说，它们是我们的良师益友。这就是为什么我们的父母终鼓励我们要多读书的理由。

读书是一好事，但我们必须多加注意书的选择。不错，我们能从好书中获得益处。然而，坏书却对我们有害无益。

2. DUTIES OF A STUDENT 学生的责任

Education is the very thing that we want to receive. Our parents send us to school so as to enable us to get (obtain) knowledge and achieve great things in the future. The following are the duties of a student (which) we should keep in mind.

In the first place, we should be filial to our parents and respectful to our teachers. In the second place, we have to (must) study as hard as we can. Last but not in the least , we must not tell lies. As the proverb says, honesty is the best policy.

To sum up, the above-mentioned rules are the very duties of a student.

教育是人人都需要接受的事情。我们父母送我们上学以便使我们能获得知识与将来成大事。下面是我们应该记住的学生的责任。

首先，我们应孝顺父母，尊敬老师。第二，我们要尽可能的用功读书。最后一点但不是最不重要的一点，我们切不可说谎。正如谚语所说，诚实为上策。

总而言之，上面所说的规则就是我们学生应尽的责任。

3. BE PATRIOTIC 要爱国

It is the duty of every citizen to make the country rich and powerful. In order to accomplish this object one must be patriotic. I consider this an unchangeable truth.

How can a student love his country? I find my answer very simple and clear. He must study hard and store up knowledge so as to serve his country in the future. If every student can do according to what I said, the country will certainly be rich and powerful.

要使国家富强是每个公民的责任。为了达到此目的，必须爱国。我认为这是一条不变的真理。

一个学生如何才能做到爱国呢？我发现答案很简单明了。他必须用功读书以积储知识以便将来服务于国家。如果每个学生能按照我所说的去做，国家一定会富强。

4. A MODEL STUDENT

Would you like to be called a bad student? Of course not. So far as I know, everybody intends to be (become) a model student.

However, to be a model student is by no means an easy thing. Firstly, he must do his best to obtain knowledge. A man without sufficient knowledge will not succeed. Secondly, he must remember to improve his health. Only a strong man can do great tasks. Thirdly, he should receive moral education. If his behavior is not good, no one will consider making friends with him.

做一个模范学生

你愿意被称为坏学生吗？当然不愿。就我所知，每个人都打算做一个模范学生。

然而，做模范学生却决不是件容易的事。第一，他必须尽力获得知识（求知）。一个没有足够知识的人是不会成功的。第二，他必须记住促进健康。只有强壮的人才能做大事。第三，他应该接受道德教育。如果他品行不好，没有人会考虑和他交朋友的。

5. FACTORS OF SUCCESS 成功的要素

I would rather suffer hardships than fail. In other words, to achieve success is my only desire. We all know that there are many factors of success. Now let me write down the most important ones in the following.

Diligence — stupid as a person is, he can succeed in his work if he works hard. That does not admit of any doubt.

Perseverance — When you fail, don't lose heart. Keep on working until you accomplish your aim.

Honesty—If you tell lies or does not keep your word/promise, no one will rely on you. I would rather be scolded than cheat (others).

我宁愿受苦难也不愿失败。换句话说，获致成功是我唯一的愿望。我们大家知道成功的要素很多。现在让我们把最重要的写在下面。

勤勉，一个人虽然不大聪明，他也能做成他的工作，如果他苦干的话。那是不容置疑的。

毅力，当你失败的时候，不要灰心。要继续努力，直到你达到目的为止。

诚实，如果你说谎或不守信，就没有人会信赖你。我宁愿挨骂也不愿欺骗人。
