Act Confident

    The famous American psychologist,Professor William James,wrote as follows:

Action seems to follow feeling,but realy action and feeling go together;and by regulating the action,which is under the more direct control of the will,we can indirectly regulate the feeling which is not.

    Thus the sovereign voluntary path to cheerfulness,if our spontaneous cheerfulness (should)be lost ,is to sit up cheerfully and to act speak as if cheerfulness were already there.If such conduct does not make you feel cheerful,nothing else on that occasion can.

   So,to feel brave,act as if we were brave,use all of our will to that end,and a fit of courage will very likely replace the fit of fear.

   Apply Professor James’ advice.To develop courage when you are facing an audience,act as if you already have it.Of course,unless you are prepared,all the acting in the world will avail but little.But granted that you know what you are going to talk about,step out briskly and take a deep breath,In fact,breathe deeply for thirty seconds before you ever face your audience.The increased supp.y of oxygen will buy you up and give you courage.The great tenor,Jeande Reszke,used to say that when you had your breath so you could sit on it”,nervousness vanished.

   Draw yourself up to your full height and look your audience straight in the eyes,and begin to talk as confidently as if every one of them owed you money.Imagine that they do,Imagine that they have assembled there to beg you for an extension of credit.The psychological effect on you will be beneficial.

   “行动似乎是紧随感觉之后的,但事实上行动与感觉是并行的;行动受到意念的直接控制。同样,通过制约行动,我们可以间接制约感觉,而它是不受意志直接控制的。

   “因此,假若我们失了自发的欢乐,那么通往欢乐的最佳的方法便是快快乐乐地坐起、说话,表现得如同欢乐就在那里。如果这样的举动不能让你感到快乐,那就别无良方了。

   “所以,要感觉自己很勇敢,那我们就得表现好像真的很勇敢。运用一切意志去达成那个目标,勇气就很可能会取代恐惧。

    运用詹姆斯教授的建议吧。为了培养勇气,当你面对观众时,不妨表现得就你真的很有勇气。当然除非你早有准备,否则再怎么表演也几乎是无用的。如果你对自己所讲的东西了如指掌的话,那就轻松地走上前去,并且作一个深呼吸。事实上,面对听众之前,应深呼吸30秒,增加氧气供应可以提神,给你勇气。杰了的男高音吉恩·雷斯基常说,如果你气充胸臆,可以“席气而坐“,紧张感便自然消逝得无影无踪了。

   身体站直,直视听众的眼睛,然后开始信心十足地讲话,好像他们每个人都欠你的钱似的。假想他们欠你的债,假想他们聚在那里请求你宽限还债的期限。这种心理作用对你大有帮助。
