《Happy Little Reporter’s Club》(5)

Campfire

After dinner, we went back to our dormitory. We were rehearsing for the campfire.

Two girls, Yang Xi and Yi Qi, would sing a song: ‘Plant the Sun’. Jia Ying would sing a song, too. Her song was  ‘Jasmine’. I also would perform. But my programme was different from theirs. I would tell an English story to the little reporters.

I felt confident that I would succeed. I arranged my things and took out some pictures of the story.

At about 8:30, we heard the whistle. We were very excited and happy. We went to the Meeting Hall. The campfire would soon begin.

We sat in a huge circle. We had beautiful fluorescent rods in our hands. We talked about the party. We guessed what kind of episodes the campfire would have.

After a little while, the host of the campfire declared that the party would begin with Miss Chen and Brother Pei lighting the campfire. Miss Chen, the chief editor of Ling Nan Youngsters’ Newspaper, and Brother Pei, the chief group leader, approached the small hand-held stove. They used a large torch to light the campfire. I photographed them. When we saw the bright flame rising in the dark night and heard the crackling sound of the campfire, we clapped and cheered. Then the host announced that the party started. Again, we clapped and cheered.

The first episode was to sing the camp song. We waved our fluorescent rods and sang. ‘If you are a happy little reporter …’ We sang up. After the song ended cheerfully, the host raised a green fan with a laughing boy on it. When we saw this fan, we must be happy and laugh our heads off. So we laughed and laughed and laughed. We laughed loudly. When we stopped laughing, our mouths couldn’t shut and some boys couldn’t even sit up straight!

Next came the programmes. There were singing, dancing, speeches, poems and interesting games. One programme was special. Four performers, all girls, took part. Two of them were cousins. The other two were cousins, too. Coincidentally, they were in the same team, the same squad and the same group. They sang the camp song together.

An interesting game was called, ‘Guess!’. Brother Pei chose 9 players. The players formed 3 groups. Each group had 3 players. One player, A, stood facing the other players, B and C. Miss Mei Mei stood behind A and held a card. The card had a word on it, such as ‘shark’, ‘watermelon’, ‘orange juice’, ‘football’ and so on. A couldn’t see the card, but B, C and all the watchers could. Then B and C should use their bodies and words to let A know what was written on the card. However, B and C couldn’t tell A any of the Chinese characters written on the card. The spectators could watch and laugh, but they couldn’t inform A. A had only one minute to guess as many words as he/she could. This meant that the A, B and C must know a lot about all things. For example, three girls were playing the game. The word on the card was ‘whale’. The girl who was C immediately said, ‘It’s a mammal in the water. Its nose is on the top of its head.’ Her partner, A, knew the word was ‘whale’ almost at once. The players had to have nimble wits. Those who could see the card must act quickly. They used short expressions rather than long sentences. Once, 3 boys were playing. The card had the word ‘eyeglasses’ written on it. One boy who faced Miss Mei Mei happened to have a pair of eyeglasses on his nose. So he pointed to his eyeglasses to let his partner know the word. One girl made her face look evil. She also pretended to fly. Then she curved her fingers so that her hands looked like claws. Her partner immediately guessed the word ‘eagle’. When all the three groups had played the game, the host counted the words they had guessed. Finally, the group of players who had guessed the most words won. They got prizes.

Another interesting episode was ‘Speeches On-the-Spot Show’. During this episode, the little reporters talked about their experiences at the club. They also told the audience what they had learnt and what they thought about the club.

I watched carefully and took pictures at times. Suddenly, the host said, ‘Zhong Wanting from the Sunny Team, please come out and get ready for your programme.’ I jumped up, got the pictures of the story and ran across the hall. I sat on a chair and waited.

In deafening applause, I walked to the middle of the hall. I grabbed the microphone in my right hand and began, ‘Dear friends …’ After introducing myself, I began the story. The story was ‘A French Traveller’. It told about how a Frenchman used his intelligence to solve an English word problem during his travelling in England. I showed the little reporters the pictures as I told the story. I also asked the listeners some questions in English.

My pragramme ended successfully. The host praised me. I received a gift box. It contained two lollipops, a bag of milk pies and an exquisite notebook. We also received small packets of biscuits and chocolates from Miss Qiu Shui and Brother Dong Ling.

The programmes ended in cheers and applause. The next episode was ‘En Masse Dance’. Miss Qiu Shui and Brother Pei taught us how to dance. Then, boys and girls danced together in loud pop music. We danced and sang. We were extremely happy.

The campfire reached its climax during the firework show. The leaders set off fireworks on the big grassland. The beautiful fireworks exploded in the dark sky. The sky was coloured silver, gold, pink, red, orange, yellow, apricot, emerald, indigo, azure, violet, brown ... The sky was gorgeous with the different colors. Miss Mei Mei set off a ‘Colorful Beads’. The firework burst in the air. We saw small bead-like sparks in the sky, flying in different directions. One after one, they changed colours. We cheered. A ‘Silver Stars’ flew into the air and exploded. Hundreds of small silver star-like sparks glittered in the sky. Several golden rockets flew in the same direction and before we realized that some more fireworks had exploded, they disappeared. A strange firework flew in circles. Then it burst and small purple ‘planes’ flew out. The ‘planes’ became violet, then lavender. Finally they became mulberry and vanished. There were fireworks on the ground, too, such as ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Magic Rain’. Our eyes were very busy. We praised the beautiful fireworks at times. We were astonished by some strange fireworks. We were amused by some funny fireworks.

At about ten o’clock, the campfire ended. We were still very excited. What a great party!

Good Bye Club

The next morning, I was waken up by the whistle. I saw my roommates all packing their things. Oh yes, today we would leave the base. We were all reluctant to leave.

I packed my things in my big bag. I folded the quilt and put the pillow on it. My bedfellow and I put the hangers in the washing bucket.

When all things were in order, I exchanged my data with several other girls. Yes, we were all unwilling to leave our good friends.

Just then, we heard the loud whistle. We went to have breakfast. We had porridge, eggs and meat rolls for breakfast. It was just like an ordinary breakfast at my home. We still talked and laughed as we ate, but we all knew that this was the last meal we had together at the Base.

After breakfast, we went to our room. We still had snacks together. We still chatted happily. Everything happened as usual. But we were all hiding our sad emotions.

When we were in the middle of an interesting conversation, we heard the whistle again. We took our luggage and went to have a meeting.

We sang the camp song together for the last time. We laughed together for the last time. We learned things together for the last time. We played together for the last time.

The host said that we should play a game together for the last time. It was called ‘Find Questions’. We still screamed and clapped, like yesterday and the day before yesterday. We found small bags with our team names and squad numbers. We answered questions on the cards in the bags. We took photos of our teams. We still cheered and ran about, like yesterday and the day before yesterday. We were always happy little reporters.

The meeting was over. We gathered our things and walked out to the parking, where we had got off the buses and looked at everything here curiously. That was Saturday, when my friends and I arrived here cheerfully. We walked about and explored everything! Oh, but that was one day ago. Time passed so quickly.

The buses were waiting for us! We had to get on the buses. As I boarded the bus, I took another glance at the base. Oh, it was so beautiful!

The bus moved forward slowly. We took a final look at the lovely base. We looked at the trees, the grass and the lake, which were now so familiar to us!

‘Good bye, little lake dwellings! Good bye, Meeting Hall! Good bye, Wire Bridge! Good bye, Kitchen and Dining Hall! Good bye, Base!’

I will never forget Happy Little Reporter’s Club. That is my happiest childhood time!
