A soft rain began to fall, slanting, soundless. It muffled the few night noises. Elaine made no move to go indoors. The man’s hand continued to restrain her. She saw that he was engrossed in his thoughts, thoughts too profound for her fathoming. There was a time when their like minds had traveled parallel. Paths,  and thoughts were interchangeable. Now ignorant of his lifestyle, his current interests, his progress at work, she no longer had a basis on which to found an understanding of his mental processes. The gentle rain seemed an expression of her sorrow.

Raindrops gathered his thick lashes and blurred Ross’s vision. The woman appeared smaller, fragile, her countenance smoother and almost girlish. It brought to his mind a slim bride with smiles in her eyes, making tender, shy advance; he heard again the whispered endearments and felt her arm linked trustingly through his.

The drops of moisture he blinked away: The remembrance was not so readily dispersed. A depression, heavier than the rain, settled upon him.

“The lawns need cutting,” he remarked curtly.

There was no reply.

“This shrub will have to be pruned or you’ll be scratching the car on it. Haven’t you done anything to the garden at all, since I left?”

The state of the garden, they both knew, had nothing to do with the terseness, the irritation, that he exhibited. Elaine bore no resentment, nor did she trouble to indicate the various chores she had attended to around the place.

“I’ll get around to it, eventually.” she said, in a lackluster manner. “I’m rather tired when I arrive home at night, and then there’s always the tea to fix. Next weekend it’s a Parents’ Working Bee at the school and I promised the kids……

Elaine plucked a twig from the offending japonica and set about its systematic defoliation with savage concentration. Please, don’t let me sound bitter! Please, don’t let there be a fight! Don’t let him go away feeling annoyed with me!

“Won’t Jillian be wondering where you are at this late hour?” What a switch! she thought to herself, me caring about that, after all those nights I used to lie awake, waiting and worrying. And listening. Listening                    to him easing the car up the driveway; listening to the creak of the floorboards as he tiptoed through the house, his shoes in his hand and the red imprint of Jillian’s lips on the lobe of his ear.

She’s up in Sydney. At present. There’s going to be a big protest at the docks. Some issue involving a nuclear-powered submarine. In any case, Jillian and I have what she describes as an open relationship,__ no strings, no questions asked.”
