For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: Student Use of Computers. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the chart and the outline given below:

1.上图所示为1990年、1995年、2000年某大学生使用计算机的情况,请描述其变化;

Student Use of Computer

Since 1990, there has been tremendous growth in the use of computers by students. While in 1990, the average number of hours a student spent on the computer was about one hour per week, this number grew to nearly four hours per week by 1995, and to approximately 20 hours per week by the year 2000.

This significant growth in the use of computers by students in the 1990s can be attributed to several factors, including widespread usage, lower prices, and technological and social developments. Nowadays, computers are widely used by students for word processing, book keeping, multimedia presentations, and access to the Internet for both research and communications. Additionally, since 1990, due to competition and technological advances, computer hardware and software prices, as well as Internet usage charges have dropped significantly. Finally, technological developments and changes in social habits in the 1990s have played a major role in this tremendous growth in the use of computers. Todays society relies heavily on computers for immediate access to the news and for entertainment, including, listening to music, watching movies and sport events, and playing computer games.

While computers are of great assistance to the students, and therefore, are indispensable tools, they also pose some challenges. The biggest challenge that many students face is discipline in the use of this powerful device. That is, students need to have the discipline of not allowing themselves to be lured by the entertaining aspects of this wonderful toolaspects that can result in addiction to computer games or viewing of undesirable material on the Internet. That is to say, students need to use this powerful tool with great wisdom!

  Li Ming
  Chinese Department
  Beijing University
  Beijing, P. R.China

 Mrs. Mary Smith
  26 Long Street
  London, N. W. 16
  Great Britain

  Chinese Department
  Beijing University
  Beijing, China
  1000
  30th Jan 2004
Prof, Mary Smith
26 Long Street
London, H. W. 16←
Great Britain
Dear Madam, ←

Sincerely

签名→Li Ming

Jan. 30, 2002 Jan. 30th, 2002

30th Jan. 200230 Jan, 2002

  Prof. Wang
  Chinese Department
  Beijing University

Yours truly, Truly yours, Faithfully yours, Yours faithfully, Respectfully yours, Yours respectfully, Yours lovingly, Yours, Yours ever

Enc. Drive License

P. S. (postscript)

I’d like to apply for the job (post, position) advertised...

In answer to your advertisement, I wish to apply for...

I have had the experience of...

I am very interested in (keen on) ...

I shall be much obliged if you will give me an opportunity for interview...

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Cell Phone

Nowadays, with the rapid development of information industry, cell phones play a dominant role in people's life. But, like everything else, they have both favorable and unfavorable aspects. First, it's useful. As a wireless mobile telephone, it's easy and handy contact the person you are looking for however far away he is. Therefore, it greatly facilitates people's life. Second, it's convenient. Whenever one meets trouble or something urgent, one can make a call immediately. Most important of all, it's a very helpful companion. With a multifunctional cell phone in hand, one can easily get on the Net, browsing the useful information, conducting e-commerce and doing whatever one can do via Internet.

However, just as everything has two sides, the cell phone also has many disadvantages. To begin with, it's expensive to buy and pay the hills, especially that of global service. To make matters worse, it's also easy to lose and costly to get it repaired. Worst of all, it's not as clear as a family telephone and sometimes the number dialed is often not available. Last but not least, it's alleged the microwaves in it might do harm to people's health.

In my opinion, with its expenses greatly reduced after China's entry into the WTO, it will face an ever brighter future in its development. Someday most of them will be developed into new Internet-enabled mobile phones, which will be as useful as pocket computers. And I believe its advantages will not only offset its disadvantages, but also far outweigh them.

Online Chatting
With the development of computers, the Internet has made its way into our daily life, Online chatting as a new communicative way has become more and more popular, especially with youngsters. However, like everything else, online chatting has both advantages and disadvantages.
On one hand, people can make friends and air their views freely on line. When they feel frustrated they may talk with a stranger on line rather than with their parents or friends. For they think it's easier to talk
with a stranger on line. They can also chat with people from different areas all over the world. When the chat is over, they feel contented and refreshed. On the other hand, some young people become too addicted to online chatting. They will sit in front of the computer day and night. It is not only a waste of time but also harmful to their health.
In my opinion, online chatting does bring a lot benefits to our life, but we should try to reduce the negative effects to the minimum and make online chatting our valuable assistant.

On Water Shortage

No one can have failed to notice the fact that water shortage is a grave problem with which the whole world is confronted. Actually it has become so widespread that it has severely affected people’s daily life and hindered the development of the global economy.

A number of factors could account for the problem but the following might be the critical ones. First with the development of agriculture and industry an increasing amount of water is needed. Secondly the ever-increasing population is another leading cause of water shortage. Besides the global tendency of warming up also contributes to the problem. What’s worse pollution and waste of fresh water aggravate the situation.

In view of the seriousness of the problem effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First it is essential that laws and regulations be worked out and enforced to protect water resources. Secondly people should enhance their awareness of saving water. With these measures taken it is reasonable for us to expect a brighter future.

Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus

As the society advances, it is essential for us college students to get to know the world outside the campus. Firstly, it enlarges our scope of knowledge. Secondly, it prepares us for entering the society. Finally, it makes us more aware of our duty as college students and thus stimulates us to work harder.

There are many ways for us to know the outside world. To begin with, we can watch TV, read newspapers or listen to radio. In this way, we can keep ourselves well-informed of what is going on home and abroad. Next, we can take part in such social practices as conducting a survey and participating in community projects. These will reward us with much experience. With which we will serve the society better when we enter it .

As a college student in the modern age, I will get myself out of the ivory tower and into the real world. On one hand, I will read more frequently the newspaper so as to keep myself informed of current affairs. On the other side, I plan to find a part-time job like being a tutor or a waiter. The job will help me to know the society more directly.

What Would Happen If There Were No Electricity
1.
3.
Ever since early this century, electricity has become an essential part of our life. Modern industrial and agricultural production must rely on it. Modem traffic, communication and entertainment as well as our daily life have much to do with it. It can he said that ours is an electric age.
If there were no electric power, no machines could be run, no living things could survive, no civilization would exist in the world. It's clear that without electric power living things would be hard to live on the earth.
Therefore, we must go out of our way to exploit waterpower resources and sparingly use electricity so as to make good use of it in our country.
