The Story of Guo Nian
Long ago the monster Nian lived in China. He lived in the deep ocean. He often came to small villages just before New Year. He ate animals and people. Everyone was afraid of him. They took all their things and ran to the mountains before New Year.
很多年以前，妖怪“年”住在中国。它住在深海里。它经常在新年前夕来到小村庄。它吃动物还有人。每个人都害怕它。在新年前，它把人们的所有的东西都拿走然后跑到山上去。
One year an old wise man came to visit a small village in the south of China. He said to an old woman he wanted to scare the monster away. Everybody told the old to go, because the monster was too dangerous.
有一年一个智者来到中国南方的一个小村庄。他对一个老妇人说他想要把妖怪吓走。每个人都告诉这个老智者赶紧走，因为这个妖怪非常的危险。
The old man stayed. At midnight the monster came to the village. He saw the old woman＇s house .He saw red paper decorations outside the house. The monster trembled with fear. He hated the colour red. He looked inside the house. There was a bright light. The monster hated bright lights.
这个老智者待下来了。在午夜的时候妖怪来到了村庄。它看到了这个老妇人的房子。它看到房子外面用红色之装饰着。这个妖怪吓得发抖。它讨厌红色。它到房子屋里看。屋里有很亮的光。妖怪很讨厌亮光。
The old wise man saw the monster and came outside. He was wearing red clothes. He lit some firecrackers. The monster hated firecrackers. He was afraid of noise. He ran back to the ocean.
这个智者看到妖怪后从外面走来.他穿着红色的衣服.他点了一些鞭炮.这个妖怪讨厌鞭炮.而且他害怕噪声.于是它跑回了海里.
The villagers came back home. Everything was happy and safe. They thanked the old wise man. They knew later he was a god who came to help them.
村民们返回了家.每件物品都完好无损.他们感谢了这个智者.他们后来知道这个智者是来帮助他们的神仙。.
From that day on, on every New Year, the people of the village put up red decorations. They lit bright lights. They lit firecrackers. They sang and danced in the street. They said ,“Guo Nian.” They were happy and safe. The monster Nian, never came to their village again.
