3Appreciating the Wonder of the Light

This One-Thousand-Angle Light, 6.5 meters tall, 5.5 meters wide, looks like a light mountain from the distance, splendid, gorgeous and dazzling. The light, with a great variety of shapes and adornments, appears very complicated when you approach to appreciate it. The light with its octagon body, from above to below, is made up of three parts, including the top, the body and the bottom. The outside of the body is adorned with ribbons and columns.

On the top of the light there are eight vivid colored pythons, with red pearls in their mouths as well as exquisite scales and claws in motion, seemingly flying out of the light body which is hung with twenty-four ribbons. Eight light eaves are put between the eight pythons. The vibrating pompoms look very colorful and unusual. Three circles of the colored double-eaves symbolizing the tile are in their proper order, with different girths. Between the three circles of double-eaves, on the pink ground, the patterns of peach blossom and butterfly are covered. At the joint between the top and the body, eight picture frames knotted with the scarlet pierced flower patterns. The eight frames are mounted with eight quietly elegant traditional Chinese paintings of swimming fish as well as flower-and-bird. The eight picture frames are linked together with the isosceles-triangle-shaped carving frames with the scarlet pierced flower patterns on them. The eaves are dexterously restrained downwards so as to connect the comparatively small light body. Those who raise their heads can enjoy the paintings, while those who stand afar off can see the pythons.

The light body is the main part. The octacolumn, in the middle of the body and slantingly restrained upward and downward, consists of three parts -- the upper, the middle, and the lower part. The upper and lower slanting bodies are fixed with square frames with the scarlet pierced flower patterns, mounted with eight traditional Chinese paintings of landscapes as well as flower-and-bird and swimming fish. The flowers are in full bloom with dews; the sparrows are singing in the rising sun; the fish are frolicing freely in the water; the mountain and waters are shrouded in mist; the trees and rocks turn dark-green. The upper and lower slanting bodies are linked with the two-sided isosceles-triangle-shaped carving frames with the scarlet pierced flower patterns on them, making the bodies slantingly restrained upward and downward so as to connect the octacolumn in the middle of the body.

The central octacolumn, fixed with the picture frames with gate-house and pierced flower gate sides, is mounted with eight pictures with Chinese Spring Festival Style, such as “Favorable Weather”, “Celebration of A Harvest Year”, “Double Happiness Welcoming the Spring”, “Three Stars of Happiness, Wealth and Longevity”, “Richness, Powerfulness and Auspiciousness”, “Qilin Sending A Baby”, “Shining of Three Stars”, creating a very auspicious and festive atmosphere. Beside the obverse side of the festive pictures, erecting and rectangle-shaped flower-and-bird pictures are adorned. Thus, the pictures with the combination of festive folk style and quietly elegant literati style, are popular with both intellectuals and the general public. The upper and the lower parts of the pictures are adorned with the two-sided isosceles-triangle-shaped carving railings with the scarlet pierced flower patterns on them.

Five patterns work as the carving for the light body. They are double coins, Chinese plum coin, Chinese plum in bloom, Chinese plum in second bloom, cross-top Chinese plum. These patters are very complicated and reflect each other.

Ribbons and columns are attached to the surface of the body. Since the originally-embroidered ribbons by Royal Aunt were destroyed many years ago, new ones have to be remade for the exhibition. The ribbons are divided into eight groups, each of which has three, from inside to outside, long to short, big to small. The colorful ribbons, irregularly set and with two-sided yellow background, are embroidered with 168 pictures of flower-and-bird style. Eight columns, circled with green leaves and colorful flowers, are evenly distributed on the eight angles. The columns and the mainly red body add radiance and beauty to each other and look very splendid.

Originally, the One-Thousand-Angle Light itself could stand on the ground with the whole body sustained by the columns, but in later ages, “standing” was changed into “hung” and thus the columns became a part of the ornaments. The light bottom, under the colored tassel, is dotted with little bulbs which look similar to the One-Thousand-Angle Light, meaning endless lights and ceaseless generations. When the ingeniously and exquisitely wrought One-Thousand-Angle Light is on, it looks very shining, splendid in green and gold, reproducing the poised and stately Royal manner of the Song Dynasty’s palace lantern.

4Expecting the Splendor of Light

According to DongGuan dialect, One-Thousand-Angle Light has the same pronunciation as One-Thousand Population, so, a thousand angles and a thousand lamps mean flourishing in population. Besides, One-Thousand-Angle Light implies the light of happiness and of “Flourishing in Descendents”. The One-Thousand-Angle Light can be rated an outstanding light of the millennium due to its exquisite making technique as well as its long history and its huge bulk. At present, not only is it the treasure of DongGuan’s history and culture, but also it is a splendid and exotic flower of Chinese folk craft.

In recent years, the One-Thousand-Angle Light has frequently won prizes and made people wonder at its fine modeling shapes as well as its exquisite craft. In February, 2005, the One-Thousand-Angle Light made by the aged artisan Zhang JinPei entered for the Chinese Colored Light Design Competition of China· ShenYang International Spring Festival Light Gathering and got the first of the Gold Prize of “Mountain Flower Award” and the title of “Chinese First Light”. In September, 2006, the One-Thousand-Angle Light entered for the Second GuangDong Folk Craft Treasure Exhibition and got the Gold Prize. At present, the two aged artisan Zhang Sen and Yin Quan have passed away. The only witness and participant of the One-Thousand-Angle Light -- Zhang JinPei is now in his nineties. In order to have the technique of the One-Thousand-Angle Light passed on and not to have it become a legend, the aged artisan Zhang JinPei has begun to instruct his grandson Zhang YanShen in the making of the ancient light.

We are certain to believe that the One-Thousand-Angle Light, a folk craft of DongGuan full of Chinese unique wits, will be passed on from generation to generation and prevail with the powerful support by all sectors of society as well as the great attention given by the Party and the Government.
