(L: Li Ming H: Mrs. Hunt)
L: (Counting the tourists) Are all the people here, Mrs. Hunt?
H: No, not yet. One lady hasn’t come yet. Oh, there she is.
L: (To Mrs. Hunt) We can go now, can’t we?
H: Yes, please.
L: (To all the people in the coach, after a while) Welcome, ladies and gentlemen. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Li Ming. I’m a guide from the Travel Service. Welcome to China. We are glad to have you here. I expect after such a long trip you’d like a good rest. So we are driving straight to the hotel…
H: Which hotel?
L: The East China Hotel.
H: I’ve been told that’s a good one. Well, how far is it?
L: Quite a way. It’ll take us about thirty minutes. Well, we’ve reserved four suites and eight single rooms for you at the hotel. It’s one of the best in the city. It has a dining-room, a Chinese restaurant, a bar, a barbershop, a beauty parlor and a laundry service. We hope you’ll have a good time there.
H: That’s great!
L: As we go, please enjoy a glimpse of the outskirts and the city.
H: This tree-lined road is beautiful, and everything in these fields looks so fresh and green.
L: Yes. That’s one of the reasons why the crops are so good in spite of the rather bad weather we’ve had.
H: (Surprised to see so many newly-built two-storied houses dotted about the fields) Look! I wonder whose houses they are. They all look brand-new.
L: They are farmers’ houses.
H: How splendid! I wonder if I could visit some of them.
L: Certainly. We’ll include it in your sightseeing program…Please look straight ahead, you can see a pagoda. It dates back to the 10th century. Beside the pagoda there’s an ancient temple…Here’s the famous botanical garden, with exotic flowers and rare trees in great variety…Now here we’re in the city proper…Here’s the museum, there’s the art gallery, and that’s the exhibition center…the tall building you see over there. Here we are. This is East China Hotel.

Reading Leaving the Airport

Ernest Walker is the driver of a bus that is operated by the city’s bus company especially for people using the airport. When Mr. Walker finishes putting the baggage into the compartment, he stands on the sidewalk in front of the bus. He is waiting for other travelers who may wish to ride to the city.
Mr. Walker’s bus runs on a schedule.
If a bus is filled up with passengers, Mr. Walker can leave ahead of schedule, or early. He is not allowed to leave ahead of schedule if he does not have a full load. And he is not allowed to leave unless there is another, extra bus waiting to leave on schedule, or on time.
Even if a driver has only a few passengers, the bus must leave the airport on schedule.
Mr. Walker knows how important it is that he should keep on schedule. He knows that the bus schedule is important to arriving passengers as well as to departing passengers. When airline passengers leave the terminal building, they want to find ground transportation ready and waiting to take them to their destinations. They find it inconvenient if buses are not available.
It is helpful for arriving passengers to know when they will arrive at their destinations. To know the arrival time is important if a hotel is holding a room until a certain time or if a friend is meeting them.
When more passengers come up to the bus, Mr. Walker loads their suitcases into the baggage compartment. He looks at his watch and then boards to the bus.
It’s time to start. Mr. Walker gets in his seat, turns on the ignition, and starts the bus. The bus pulls away from the curb. They are on their way out of the airport.
As they leave the airport, the bus driver tells his passengers: “On the right you will see a large metal sculpture. It symbolizes our country’s struggle for independence.”
Mr. Walker tells the passengers about the famous artist who designed the sculpture and something about the history behind it.
Most of the passengers appreciate being told about things they see en route to their hotels. They feel that it makes the ride more interesting.
When they pass a large building with several sports fields, Mr. Walker tell them it is a college. He is very proud of his country and enjoys telling people about the things they see. The passengers to whom he talks can hear the pride in his voice.
Soon the driver announces the first stop where several passengers get off. Mr. Walker gets off with them in order to get their luggage from the compartment. Then he boards the bus and off they go again.
A short time later, the bus driver tells the Silvers that they are arriving at the Hotel Central. The time went very quickly on the bus because Mr. Walker made the trip so interesting.
The part of his job that Mr. Walker enjoys most is telling people about his country. He has studied the history of his country and has learned about the places he passes on the way to and from the airport. Mr. Walker is proud of what his country has achieved. He enjoys representing his country to tourists.
For all the different things that he does on his job, Mr. Walker is glad that he learned English. Most of the foreign visitors who ride his bus can understand and speak English. Mr. Walker feels he does his job better and enjoys it more because he knows English.
