8. The story of a merchant and a thief

Once there was a merchant whose business was to exchange money. He opened a shop in the currency market and began to do his business.

One day he returned home from the shop with a bag of gold when a gang of thieves passed by. They were absolutely green with envy when they saw that bag of gold, but couldn't think out a good idea. Then a dodgy bloke among them bragged,"I can manage to get that bag of gold."

"What is it?" The fellows disbelieved what he said.

"You just wait and see!" The guy seemed to be very confident and followed the merchant right away.

When the merchant returned home he put the money on the desk, getting ready to wash his hands for church. He told his maid,” I am going to do church, please get me some water” Then he hurried to the washroom. The maid did as she was told and got the water carefully. But she forgot to close the gate, which give the thief a good chance. He broke into the house easily and took away the bag of money on the desk. Then he fled immediately.

He returned to his fellows and told them the experience of stealing the money proudly.

After hearing his story, his fellows all praised him with great awe, "To the almighty god, Alas, we swear that undoubtedly you can be counted as the most intelligent and capable person among us. You have done an excellent job on this matter, which no one else could have done. But the merchant family must be in a mess now. Just imagine that if the merchant found the money was gone when he came out of the washroom, he would certainly blame the maid and beat her severely. In this sense, you haven't done a perfect job! You will be a real man if you can save the maid and rid her of the suspicion, without her being beaten and abused."

"If this is the will of Alas, I must save the girl. She is innocent."

After saying so, the thief left his fellows and ran back to the door of the merchant's house. He listened with his head tilted slightly to one side and found that the maid was beaten by her master, crying sorrowly. He couldn’t bear to see it any longer and knocked at the door forcefully. Immediately the merchant's voice came,” Who is knocking at the door?".

"It's me, servant of the one who lives next to your stop." Thief lied thoughtlessly.

The merchant opened the door and asked,” What’s up?".

"My master wants me to give you his wishes. He says how you could be so carelessly and leave a bag of gold in front of your store without taking it. It would be a great loss if someone else pick it up. Fortunately, my master noticed it and kept it for you". After saying so, the thief took out the money.

On seeing the money, the merchant felt very surprised and whispered to himself,” This is my money!”

"Please swear to Alas, you must write a receipt to my master. Only after doing that can I give you the money.” the thief pretended to be calmly,"Otherwise, I’m afraid my master will doubt that I didn’t give back the money to you. So please write me a receipt and stamp your personal seal."

Of course, the merchant believed what the thief said without any doubt and turned to write the receipt.

Then, taking the money, the thief turned and got clear away swiftly. In this way, the maid cleared herself of the injustice and the thief got the moneybag.
