Learning Chinese the fun way is much easier to remember.

Welcome to this edition of Happy China.

Xi'an is an important birthplace of the Chinese nation, just like the main roots of a huge tree.

Here you can find traces everywhere of Chinese civilization.

Han Jia, you'd better not use absolute terms.

For instance, on the mountain and in the forest here, are there any traces of civilization?

  Sure. Seeing is believing.

Let me take you to see if we can find any.

  What could we find here?

Oh, we've finally climbed up the hill.

  Daniel, this is our destination.

Oh, isn't this a Taoist temple?

This is the place where you wan to show me the traces of civilization?

Yeah. Some 2,400 years ago, Lao Zi taught here.

Lao Zi? Lao Zi is also very famous abroad.

The book, Tao Te Ching, has been translated into many languages.

He was the founder of Taoism.

Lǎozǐ shì dàojiā sīxiǎng de chuàngshǐrén.

Lao Zi was the founder of Taoism.

His statements are full of philosophy,

such as "content with one's lot", "restraint of desires" and "wu ji bi fan" (A thing will turn into its opposite if pushed too far).

You even know "wu ji bi fan", eh?

"wu ji bi fan" means that when things have reached their extreme, they will turn into their opposites.

The phrase is often used in Chinese.

"wu ji bi fan" is a Chinese idiom which means when an action is reached its extreme, there will be an equal and opposite counter reaction.

  "wu ji bi fan".

Lao Zi was a great philosopher in Chinese history.

His philosophical thinking has exerted a great influence on Chinese society.

This does prove that in Xi'an, there are traces of civilization everywhere.

So I didn't say anything wrong. Let's go.

  Look.

It's strange. Why is this stone table sealed off?

No, this is not a stone table.

They were the millstones used by Lao Zi when grinding medicinal herbs.

  You just knock at it.

Does it sound like an iron rod?

Striking at it produces clear and melodious sounds.

So people call it the Sounding Stone.

Why does it produce this kind of sounds?

  This is no ordinary stone.

It's a meteorite, containing lots of metal components.

So it can produce sounds different from that of ordinary stones when being struck at.

It seems there are many interesting things here.

Kàn lái zhèlǐ de dōngxi dōu hěn tèbié.

All things here seem to be very special.

There are things you may find more interesting.

Let me take you to see some national treasures. Let's go.

Han Jia, you said you would take me to see some national treasures, but why are you taking me to a zoo here?

  This is not a zoo.

It is a wildlife breeding and protection center.

Look, the national treasures are right over there.

  You mean those long-beaked birds?

  They are crested ibises.

There are only a few hundred of them in the world.

  Why so few?

The cause is the deteriorating environment.

In the 1970s, the birds were rarely seen in the wild, except here. Thus a habitat of the crested ibises has been preserved.

Daniel, come here and see the takins.

  What? They're looking so tame.

They are seemingly tame, but they have very short tempers.

It's said that men can not be judged by their looks, the same rule also applies to animals.

  Right.

The number of the world's takins is very limited.

So they are also a rare animal.

How many rare animal species here?

Zhèr dàodǐ yǒu duōshǎo zhǒng zhēnxī dòngwu ne?

How many kinds of rare animal are there here?

  How many of them?

Five, including golden monkeys, brown-eared pheasants and another species, which most people are familiar with and love very much.

Oh, I know they are giant pandas.

Giant pandas are the loveliest animal.

They live in the Qinling Mountains of China.

They are lovely because of their naive and cute behaviors.

Giant pandas had existed hundreds of thousands of years ago.

So people call them living fossils.

They are a special wild animal peculiar to China.

I am satisfied that I have seen so many rare animals today.

You are satisfied, but I feel I'd like to see more.

Then, let's get into today's Feast for the Eyes and take your time to enjoy yourself.

The Louguantai Tower stands in Xi'an's Zhouzhi County.

Hidden among mountain ranges, he tower is believed to be the place where Lao Zi taught Taoism.

This ancient monument exudes vestiges of Taoism.

In the quiet mountain forests, there are rare animals, which are under careful protection.

They are living a carefree life in the habitat.

Well, audience friends, Today's question is as follows.
