Learning Chinese the fun way is much easier to remember.

Welcome to this edition of Happy China to continue with our Xi'an trip.

Daniel, what's your impression about Xi'an?

It is surely true to say that the whole city of Xi'an is a history museum.

There are so many fascination historical relics and ancient sites of cultural interest.

Since you talked about museum, today we are going to visit the Shaanxi History Museum.

There, you will be able to ...

Han Jia, you'd better stop talking and let us go see with our own eyes.

  OK.

There are so many bronze objects here.

As early as 3,600 years ago, bronze objects were already made in China.

And in the ensuing 1,000 years, China witnessed a bronze age.

Here, you can see various exemplary bronze objects of ancient China.

  Yes. Please look.

Here, we can see a variety of bronze cooking vessels, known as ding.

The ding bronze objects were used in ancient China not only as a cooking utensil but also as a sacrificial vessel symbolizing power and dignity.

Exactly, ding is not only a cooking utensil but also a sacrificial vessel.

Dǐng bùzhǐ shì yǐnjù, hái shì yì zhǒng lǐ qì.

Ding were used not only in cooking, but also for ceremonial purposes.

Bronze object had their heyday over 2,000 year ago.

  Let's see this side.

Daniel, we've seen so many relics, but do you know how many eras we have visited so far?

The earliest was the pottery era in prehistoric times.

Then the Bronze Age over 2,000 years ago.

And in the Qin and Han dynasties, their iron tools and architecture were quite outstanding.

Then the various historical relics, featuring different ethnic styles. They came from the periods when different ethic groups lived harmoniously.

And then it was ancient China's most prosperous period-   the Tang Dynasty.

In a square shape like a checkerboard,

it was then one of the largest cities in the world.

It was eight times as big as Xi'an in the Ming Dynasty, with a population reaching one million.

It's just one million, but why did you say "shang bai wan"?

In Chinese, the word "shang" may have different meanings, depending on the collates it goes with.

Here it means "reaching certain degree" or "certain amount".

For instance, "shang gui mo" (reaching a large scale); "shang dang ci" (reaching a high degree); "shang qian ren" (nearly 1,000 people) and "shang nian ji" (reaching an old age).

  Oh I see.

Here "shang" means to reach a certain extent or a certain number.

For example, Chang'an in the Tang Dynasty had nearly one million people.

Táng dài de chángān yōngyǒu shàng bǎi wàn rénkǒu.

In the Tang Dynasty Chang'an had a population of one million.

Is this a tri-color glazed pottery object of the Tang Dynasty?

This work of art looks so familiar.

This is the famous tri-color glazed camel carrying musicians.

  It's fantastic!

This camel carries eight musicians and dancers.

If you look carefully, you'll find all of them are foreigners.

Base on the their attire, we can see that they are all foreigners, like me.

After the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, then came the Gold Era.

There are a large number of gold and silver objects of the Tang Dynasty here.

Based on some of the art objects, we can see there were extensive exchanges with the outside world during the Tang Dynasty.

Han Jia, we can only see from them that China was quite wealthy then, but why did you say exchanges with the outside world were very extensive then?

  You don't know about this.

From these gold and silver objects, we can see that many Western methods were used in making these gold and silver objects, such as the filigree and inlay techniques, which were all adopted from abroad.

  Oh, I see.

It seems that during the Tang Dynasty, China attached importance to exchanges with foreign countries.

Zhōngguó shífēn zhùzhòng duì wài jiāoliú hé jièjiàn.

At that time,China attached great importance  to foreign exchanges and learning from the experiences of other countries.

I didn't expect that from these small objects, we could learn so many interesting things.

Exactly, the Shaanxi History Museum is a place of historical treasures.

Han Jia, thanks a lot for telling me so much.

In fact, there are many other valuable relics here.

We'll leave them for our audience to appreciate.

Now today's Feast for the Eyes.

The Shaanxi History Museum is a national-level museum, keeping as many as 370,000 valuable relics.

The bronze objects are pristine and elegant.

The tri-colored glazed pottery objects are delicate and life-like.

Every relic here bears vestiges of time proofs of the distant sources of Chinese civilization.

The museum highlights the ancient history and splendid culture in the Shaanxi region.
