Hello everyone, I'm the merry Han Jia. Welcome to Happy China.

I'm now in the Forest of Tablets at the Ruins of Yin in Anyang to meet you on time.

You would wonder why Daniel is not with me.

I think he must be afraid of coming here.

  I'm the happy Daniel.

  Now a weather forecast.

There is no rain from daybreak till breakfast.s

No rain from morning till noon.

No rain from noon till night.

It's Daniel, he can even read the weather forecast on the tablet!

I must go to have a look.

Daniel, why are you late today?

Was it because you were asked to read the inscriptions on the tablets and you felt scared.

  I'm scared?

  You must be kidding.

The oracle-bone inscriptions are a weather forecast. Am I right?

  It's true, definitely.

Do you know, our audience members, 3000 years ago, people of the Shang Dynasty already started to predict climatic changes.

What's inscribed on this tablet is a weather forecast during the Shang Dynasty.

It can be said to be the earliest weather forecast ever recorded in written Chinese.

It doesn't matter if you can't read them.

Let me tell you there is an interpretation in modern Chinese on the back of the tablet.

Han Jia, the oracle inscriptions on the tablets look so beautiful.

Yes, of course. Oracle inscriptions are the earliest form of Chinese calligraphy.

Pictograms etched onto bones and tortoise shells are the earliest form of Chinese calligraphy.

These oracle inscriptions record various social events, big and small, in the Shang Dynasty, such as farming, hunting and traffic accidents.

  Hey, wait a second.

  Traffic accidents?

Three thousand years ago, what kind of traffic accidents could have occurred in China?

There were no trains, nor cars. There were even no bicycles.

But there were horse-drawn carts and very good horse-drawn carts.

Let me take you there for a look. Come on.

I never expected people of the Shang Dynasty were able to make such wonderful carts.

These carriages were, in fact, made for the aristocrats of the Shang Dynasty,

just like Rolls-Royce, our British made luxurious limousines.

  Daniel, look at those chariots.

The axles are all made of bronze.

  Han Jia, what's that?

Just a moment. Oh, I know.

That must have been a road of the Shang Dynasty, right?

  Exactly.

There are still ruts left by carts in it.

The Shang roads were really wide indeed.

Wide enough for two carts to run side by side.

Chuòchuò yǒu yú

  More than enough

Daniel, after seeing the carts, now let's see how the oracle character, "Che" (cart), is written.

  Look,

  this is the character "Che"(cart).

It's actually a drawing of a cart, I should say.

Pictographic characters are virtually drawings of real objects.

If you take further looks, you'll find the character "Che" or cart get increasingly simplified and evolve into what it looks like today.

Daniel, do you know who's the first woman general in Chinese history?

Let me see, it should be Hua Mulan. Oh, No.

It's Mu Guiying? It's not correct either.

  Here you are, it's her.

  Fu Hao? Who was she?

Fu Hao, the wife of King Wuding of the Shang Dynasty, in Chinese written history, was the first woman general.

This is the tomb of Fu Hao.

Archaeologists found 1,928 burial objects from the tomb.

  Wow, so many!

The Tomb of Fu Hao is virtually an underground museum.

Let's go inside the museum and have a look.

Daniel, do you know these two weapons?

Yes, I do. This is called "Yue" or an axe, I'm sure.

It seems to bear the name of Fu Hao on it.

  You're right.

Look, there is a tiger pattern on it.

  It represented military authority.

The dragon pattern on it symbolized sovereign power.

We may say that Fu Hao had both military authority and sovereign power.

Tā jí bīngquán hé wángquān yú yì shēn.

She had both military and imperial powers.

Han Jia, aren't they sea shells?

  They are worthless things.

But why are they among the burial objects?

  This shows your ignorance.

Sea shells were valuable things in the Shang Dynasty.

They were money used by people of the Shang Dynasty.

So they were once used as money.

  Right.

Today, many Chinese characters related to money are composed of the radical "Bei" or shell, such as "Gui"(expensive), "Jian"(cheap), "Shang"(reward), "Pei"(lose) and "Zhuan"(earn).

  It's absolutely true.

I find there are so many interesting things in the Museum of Yin Ruins.

I haven't seen enough of those exhibits.

  Want to see more?

Why not come with our audience and join the feast for our eyes and minds? Enjoy yourselves.

Don't forget to learn to speak Chinese.  And you'll have friends wherever you go.

The oracle bone script style inscriptions on the steles take in a variety of subjects.

These hieroglyphics reflect the working experiences of ancient Chinese.

These unearthed carriages of the Shang Dynasty have high values in historical researches.

In the tomb of Fu Hao, China's first female general, a total of 1,928 burial objects were unearthed.

They demonstrate the splendid culture of the Shang Dynasty.
