A eulogy for my dear wife Xiumei who passed away

My wife, Xiumei Gao, was a retired teacher, and so am I. We had been married and living together for exactly 48 winters and summers.

In 2007, she had a misfortune to suffer a stroke, (cerebral thrombosis) then in the following three years, under my cheerful care, most of her time had never lacked laughter. I took her to the fairs or markets to do shopping; we had been traveling to enjoy the mountains and rivers, and our life was in fact full of joyfulness.

But unfortunately this morning, my wife passed away, she was gone by riding on a fairy stork afar. I myself went to the Rocky-Hill cemetery located in the south of the city to arrange a final resting place for both of us.

In the dead of night, under a lone lamp, abed but rolling this way and that way, I was too grievous to sleep, finally I rose up to put on my clothes, afore my desk my tears rolling down to mix up with the black ink, my pen and heart shaking correspondingly, I composed this eulogy for my dear wife.

This is actually a memorial speech for my wife ‘s funeral. Nevertheless, when the next Tomb-sweeping day comes, this speech will be inscribed upon the back of the tombstone as an epitaph for my wife and me. Alas, lo, the sky is studded with twinkling stars, but who could really get what I am feeling right now?

I used to be a stubborn star in the Galaxy, I was invisible for a long time, yet suddenly appeared; as the guns and cannons roared loud at Lugou Bridge, I was very misfortunate to be shaken down to this earthly world. Having painstakingly lived for 70 years, I have never ever stooped low. Always striving to be the best as a human being, as well as in academic study, for that I have won myself a lifelong good name.

Though I am short in stature, my will is extremely strong; people regard me as Luyou” in this old town, who dares to speak his mind by writing a petition letter to the Central Government for the sake of all teachers’ benefits and interests in China, for which he’s therefore crowned as “One who has opened the new horizon for all teachers in China”.

My everlasting aspirations have enabled me to publish five books so far, and also have encouraged me to unremittingly seek a new way of composing modern poetry regardless of the strict ancient poetry rhyming rules. My publications are as such “The Nature of A Headstrong Bull”, it tells a story about my life. “The Legends of Our Old Town”, it’s an anthology of all sorts of anecdotes. Gleaned under the tip of my pen, there are teasing, sarcasm, laughter, and censure, which are either in praising virtues or denouncing evils. “The Heroic Blood Nurtured The Old Town”, it’s an ode to all the past heroes who shed their blood on this soil. I am physically pretty skinny, but mentally always in high spirits. An "iron pen" in my hand speaks highly of a great man, Mr. Wei Mei. I helped correct a mistake in our history, which exculpated a heroic soul.  I’d often strike beats to compose any song that dare voice unjustices for the ordinary people. I have no regrets at all in my entire life, for it is utterly worthwhile.

My wife, Xiumei is her given name; Gao is her family name, a beauty from a decent family, and also a bright star in education field, was a kind and hard working woman, who was always amiable and friendly to all her neighours and friends. We were very much in love with each other and never had any quarrel in our married life. She had been through thick and thin with me for precisely 48 years in managing our family affairs and bringing our children up, which is full of nothing but merits and contributions. When we’ve reached our old age, our children and grandchildren are all happily living around us.

Unexpectedly, the heavens could be so merciless to send for you fast and first, now you have left me behind alone here on earth. As a result of our fate, I have arranged a final resting place for you, where your head pillows on the dragon pond with green ripples, and by the pond you’d enjoy the cool breeze under the willows; your feet rest upon the Camel Peaks, at the foot of which the chanting from the Longxing temple will accompy the morning bell, where the afterglow is absolutely gorgeous. By your right side, it’s our old town with a brand new appearance, and on your left side, it’s the Yunmen Mountain surrounded by the verdant scenery, it’s so sacred, and absolutely a paradise. You could raise your head to behold me from there so as to console me a lonely man down here.

Parting in life and separated by death, it is not an unusual thing, but I feel so painful when you are now alone traveling along the alien roads towards Hades. When you are tired, no one there could look after you, which hurts me so much, alack! One day when we meet again, you could tell me all of your sufferings.

*Lu You (1125–1209), was a Chinese poet of the Southern Song dynasty.

Due to some historical circumstances, Wei Mei’s personal profiles and contributions have not been recorded in the history. In 2006, Liu Yisheng especially wrote the biography of Wei Mei, which gives an account of this legend’s legendary life. In 2010, Wei Mei has been officially written into the "Shandong History" published by Shandong Province, therefore his name has been cleared and his historical position has been reinstated.

*Wei Mei (1852 ---- 1929), courtesy name Zufeng, he was a native of East Village of Holy Water, Qingzhou City, Shandong Province. In his entire life, initially he was himself alone relentlessly struggling against the corrupt Qing dynasty, by and by he and the well-known revolutionalist Sun Yat-sen became sworn brothers, since then he and his family had actively taken part in the Anti-Qing dynasty movement and the establishment of the Republic of China, for which he made enormous remarkable contributions. Later he joined with Wang Jinmei and Deng Enming, the deputy members of the first Chinese Communist Party Congress, for the building of the Chinese Communist Party, he also made an indelible contribution. In order to support the course of revolution, he sold out all of his family properties, and nine members of his family sacrificed their lives.
