crisis after MP dies
议员死后，布郎的递补选举出现危机

a double blow today.first,the death of a labour mp election
disaster in his own backyard. Then it was announced that
unemployment had soared by 60,000 and the number of people claiming
jobseeker’s allowance was at the highest monthly rate for 15 years.
John macdougall,the labour mp for glenrothes,died early today after
a long illness, a party spokesman said. Mr macdougall,60,lost his
battle with cancer at the victoria hospital in kirkcaldy ,fife. A
labour party spokesman said:“all our thoughts are with his family
at this time.” Mr macdougall’s seat is right next to the prime
minister’s in fife and the scottish national party came second
there in the 2005 general election .the SNP will have high hopes of
demolishing mr macdougall’s 10,000 majority. Labour lost
dunfermline and west fife-the other seat neighbouring mr brown’s
kirkcaldy and cowdenbeath constituency-to the liberal democrats in
a by-election in 2006. Mr brown,who visited mr macdougall on
Monday,today paid generous tribute to him. But the loss of yet
another scottish heartland seat on mr brown’s doorstep is sure to
add further pressure on his leadership. Meanwhile,the jobless total
grew to 1.67m in the three months to june,the worst for a year.the
new unemployment rate is 5.4 per cent.
