Recycling is on the increase here in the United States as more and more entrepreneurs discover the money-making potential of transforming one business' industrial waste into another's raw material.

"Triad Energy Resources" uses industrial end products to create soil additives for use in agriculture.

Triad President, Michael Daley, says his firm was born about 12 years ago as a result of an idea that came to him when he toured a tire-burning plant.

"While I was walking along, they had this white material that was falling out of a chute, and I asked them what it was, and they said it was calcium sulfate, and I said 'well, what are you doing with it?' and they said 'we are paying 400 dollars a truck load to take it to a landfill.' Well, being in the agriculture business calcium sulfate I know is gypsum, and we use it as a soil amendment in California quite extensively. And so I said, 'Why don't you let me buy that from you?' And that's how Triad got started."

Today Triad Energy Resources helps fish farmers in Thailand and the Philippines create fertilizer from shrimp and crab waste. The company is turning leftover skins and seeds from wineries in Australia and fruit processing plants in Chile into fertilizer-making money and saving money at the same time. The Australian project, for example, not only creates a use for materials that used to be dumped in landfills, it also creates a soil enhancer 60% cheaper than the one Australian farmers used before.

Mr. Daley says the waste created by sugar refineries is also valuable. Indeed, he says just about anything that comes from food processing can be reused.

"This whole business concept comes from my mother. I grew up on a little farm and nothing went to waste. You know, anything off the table would go out into the garden and get mixed up in the garden. And we always had the best vegetables of anywhere. And I think it had a lot to do with my mother not wasting things and putting them back in and letting it decompose, and the nutrients were available to the plant."

Michael Daley has translated that concept into an international recycling business.
