There’s an analogous technique used in vision research to brightness-match two illuminated fields; it’s called “flicker photometry” . You set up a rotating mirrored sector disk ($$$!) to look alternately at field A and field B. Set the frequency of alternation around 10 Hz (where we’re most sensitive to flicker) and use a smallish field of view (because edges make a big contribution). Adjust the illumination of field B until flicker is minimized. Presto! B is photometrically matched to A.

The cool things are: a) it’s amazingly fast and sensitive - moreso than the best instruments, b) it automatically adjusts for human spectral sensitivity, so you don’t have to trust filters, and c) you can use it to brightness-match different hues, which is an impossible mess any other way.

Heterochromatic flicker photometry, thy name is Slylock Fox!
