发现英语修辞格里的比喻有两种,一种是明喻,另一种是暗喻。他们的作用是使语言更加生动形象，鲜明突出，能够更深入地阐明事件的意义或者刻画人物的性格。由于英汉两个民族的文化渊源、历史地理、生活环境、风俗习惯各不相同，审美情趣及思维方式也有所差异，这样，许多被用做比喻的形象，在外国人心目中和在中国人心目中的概念就会大不相同。这些颇为值得探讨一番，以下是笔者自己的小结。
例如：like a drowned rat的字面意思是“象落水的老鼠”，中国人很难想象出“落水的老鼠”的样子，但很容易理解“落汤鸡”的形象，所以，这儿以翻译为“好象落汤鸡”为宜。同样， to cast pearls before the swine不应该翻译为“对猪抛珍珠”而应该是“对牛弹琴”，并且也只有这样的翻译才符合汉语的表达习惯。
这一类的例子很多。为引起读者的注意，笔者现列举如下：
a lion in the way        不宜直译为“拦路狮”，应译为“拦路虎”。
a rat in a hole      不宜直译为“洞中之鼠”，应译为“瓮中之鳖”。
as bitter as wormwood不宜直译为“苦如艾篙”，应译为“苦如黄连”。
as bold as brass
不宜直译为“脸皮厚如黄铜”，应译为“脸皮厚如城墙”。
as cunning as a dead pig
不宜直译为“象死猪一样狡猾”，应译为“象狐狸一样狡猾”。
as drunk as a mouse不宜直译为“烂醉如鼠”，应译为“烂醉如泥”。
as happy as a cow
不宜直译为“快乐如母牛”，应译为“快乐得象只百灵鸟”。
as old as the hills
不宜直译为“象山一样古老”，应译为“天长地久”或“年深日久”。
as stubborn as a mule
不宜直译为“顽固得象头骡子”，应译为“犟得象头牛”。
as stupid as a goose  不宜直译为“笨得象鹅”，应译为“蠢得象猪”。
as tall as the Maypole
不宜直译为“象五月柱一样高”，应译为“象电线杆一样高”。
as timid as a rabbit  不宜直译为“胆小如兔”，应译为“胆小如鼠”。
at a stone’s throw不宜直译为“投一石的距离”，应译为“一箭之遥”。
cat on hot bricks不宜直译为“热砖上的猫”，应译为“热锅上的蚂蚁”。
dumb as an oyster不宜直译为“哑得象牡砺”，应译为“守口如瓶”。
goose pimples   不宜直译为“鹅身上的脓包”，应译为“鸡皮疙瘩”。
hungry as a bear    不宜直译为“饿得象熊”，应译为“饿得象狼”。
industrious as an ant
不宜直译为“象蚂蚁一样勤劳”，应译为“象蜜蜂一样勤劳”。
like a duck to water不宜直译为“如鸭子得水”，应译为“如鱼得水”。
like a hen on a hot girdle
不宜直译为“象热锅上的母鸡”，应译为“象热锅上的蚂蚁”。
the ass in the lion’s skin
 不宜直译为“披着狮皮的驴”，应译为“狐假虎威”。
the lion’s den              不宜直译为“狮穴”，应译为“虎穴”。
thirsty as a camel 不宜直译为“渴得象骆驼”，应译为“象一条渴龙”。
to be flung to the four winds
不宜直译为“抛给四种风”，应译为“抛到九霄云外”。
to cry up wine and sell vinegar
不宜直译为“叫嚷卖酒、卖醋”，应译为“挂羊头卖狗肉”。
to kill the goose that lays the golden egg
不应译为“杀鹅取卵”，应译为“杀鸡取卵”。
to kill two birds with one stone
不宜直译为“一石二鸟”，应译为“一箭双雕”或“一举两得”。
to live a dog’s life
不宜直译为“过狗一样的生活”，应译为“过牛马一样的生活”。
to set a fox to keep one’s geese
不宜直译为“用狐狸看守鹅群”，应译为“引狼入室”。
to swim like a duck不宜直译为“游得象鸭子”，应译为“游得象条鱼”。
to work like a horse
不宜直译为“象马一样工作”，应译为“象黄牛一样干活”。
He is the black sheep of the family.
他是全家的害群之马。（不宜直译为“全家的黑羊”）
He lives a hell of a long way off.
他住的地方远在天涯。（不宜直译为“远在地狱”）
It would make the deuce of a scandal.
这会弄的声名扫地的。（不宜直译为“引来流言蜚语的魔鬼”）
I’ve got the devil of a toothache.
我牙痛极了。（不宜直译为“碰到牙痛鬼”）
She is really a duck, he thought.
她真是一只可爱的小鸟。（不宜直译为“真是一只鸭子”）

当然，处理英语比喻句，可以照直翻译，不需要改变比喻句形象的例子也是很多的。现在列举一些如下：
