Chapter One

          

Manager’s  Dilemma

“Take care of yourself and treat others fairly. It makes better people who do good things. Better people translate into better business.” That’s the simple management philosophy of Tom Gegax(pictured),founder and CEO of Tires Plus,a tire retailer with over 150 store scattered across 12 states and revenues approaching $200 million .In an industry with extremely aggressive competitors,including retailing giants Wal-Mart and Goodyears  Tires Plus hopes to  expand nationally and double in size in the next five years. And Tom’s simple philosophy likely will play an important role in whether or not that goal is achieved.

       管好自己并且公正的看待他人,它使得那些做善事的人变得更好,好的人能经营出一番好的商业。那就是Tom的简单的管理哲学,Tom-Times Plus的创办者和首席执行官,一个拥有超过150家分散在12个州的商店的轮胎零售商,并且他的资产已接近2亿美元,在一个竞争者云集,竞争白热化的工业界里,包括有零售大亨Wal-Mart Goodyear,Tires Plus希望在接下来的五年里能在国际上迈步,并且把企业规模扩大到现在的2倍,而Tom的简单哲理很有可能会起着举足轻重的作用,不管那个目标实现与否。

       Tom’s managerial philosophy resulted from his having to deal with three significant personal crises (a divorce,  cancer, and a million-dollar business deficit)in a single eight-month period. He said,As long as our lives seem to be going ok, we don’t get on the path for personal growth.. It often takes a wake up call.”Forced to change his life for his own personal wellbeing and for the survival of his business,Tom recognized that he had to put some balance in his personal and work lives. Making those changes wasn’t easy, but now he’s a firm believer that balanced people are happier, healthier,and more confident, all of which benefits their employers as well.

       Tom 的管理哲学源于他不得不在一个仅仅8个月长的时期内处理三个重要的个人危机(离婚,癌症和一个百万美元的商业亏空)。他说:只要我们的生活看起来很好,我们不会走上那条只为我们个人发展的道路,这常常需要一个警钟。为了个人的健康安乐和自己生意的生存而被迫改变自己的生活,Tom意识到他必须让个人生活和工作保持平衡。做这些改变并不容易,但现在他坚信平衡的人会更快乐,更健康,并且更自信,而所有的这些也会让他们的雇主受益。

       For Tires Plus, this new philosophy resulted in several changes, including a new employee fitness center at the company’s Minneapolis head quarters and adopting the language and culture of sports as a pattern for the company’s structure—for instance, store managers are coaches,salespeople and mechanics are teammates,and the company’s operations manual is known as the playbook. Ultimately, Tom believed that these changes would help employees to take better care of themselves and then take better care of  customers service is critical in this industry, employees must provide exceptional customer service if the company is going to reach its goals.

      对于Tires Plus,这个新的哲学理念根源于几个变化,包括在公司的Minneapolis总部设立一个新的适当的雇员中心,并采用运动的语言和文化作为公司结构的一种模型和花样,例如,商店经理是教练,零售商和机械制造者是队友,还有公司的手工操作法以剧本而著名,最终,Tom相信这些变化将会帮助雇员更好地关心他们自己,从而更多地关心顾客。由于在这个工业界中,顾客服务员是至关重要的,因此如果公司想要达到它的目标就必须提供额外的顾客服务!

    

Now put yourself in Tom’s shoes. What managerial skills should he encourage his coaches(store managers) to use to ensure that all the company’s teammates(emplorees) do what it takes to please customers and help his firm reach its goal of doubling revenue in five years ?
