Honorific judges, ladies and gentlemen,
I am so glad that I can be
here and make my speech today. The title of my speech is DO THE
WORLD A FAVOR AT HOME.
At the
beginning of my speech, I want to ask everybody here a question,
what would you do if I give you one dollar right now? Well, for the
girls who don't care too much their weight, perhaps they are
thinking about a chocolate bar, and for the boys, several hours of
gaming on the Internet. But you know what, for some people, one
dollar means three meals. And do you know how many people will go
to bed without any food in their stomach if they do not receive one
dollar today? One hundred million. And among them, 24,000 people
will not be able to see the sunrise tomorrow.
We are global citizens; can
we just sit back and enjoy watching the sufferings die? No we
can’t. We need to take some actions!
Wait a minute, what
actions? You are neither scientist nor politician and you are not
wealthy, there is nothing I can do. I seriously doubt it. According
to the US Department of Agriculture, up to one-fifth of America's
food goes to waste each year, with an estimated 130 pounds of food
per person ending up in landfills. The annual value of this lost
food is estimated at around $31 billion. But the real story is that
roughly 49 million people could have been fed by those lost
resources. In china 3 billion kg of foods were wasted at the tables
every year. The food wasted could feed 50 million people for one
year.
Here are the actions. Do
not prepare too much food next time you arrange a party. Do not
throw your leftovers out of the window just because they are not
tasty enough. Do not show your wealth by ordering a lot of foods in
restaurants and leave them exactly the same when they were brought
to the tables. Do check your fridge once in a while before they go
bad.
Ladies and gentlemen, we do
not have to be scientists or politicians or millionaires to perform
our global citizenship. And you do not have to give up your
chocolate bars and computer games. We can do the world a favour at
home. If we can do it, I strongly believe one day one dollar can
also mean a chocolate bar to the suffering people.
