Savoring Cherries

Cherry trees were bearing fruits in May when we returned to my courtyard in the hometown. In the courtyard grows verdant plants, among which are two cherries trees bearing red cherries just like two beautiful Chinese brides in red cape. Though the trunks of the cherry trees are not large, they have cloud-like crowns and exuberant branches and twigs, which are bending with fruits especially in the harvest season. Since the trees stood at each side of the only concrete road of the yard, I had to bend down to pass through. Standing under the cherry trees, I felt as if I were in an orchard, with red, yellow and green cherries front, back, and all around. How cute and exquisite they were!

Have you ever seen Maru grapes? Cherries appear to be more sparkling and polished than they are. Have you ever seen agates? Cherries are more tasteful compared to them. Most people like to taste what is just in season. Not until this year did I have the chance to taste fresh cherries under the trees. It was raining in May Day holiday, with misty drizzles following showers. Thus, on each cherry was glistening a rain drop. Let me have a taste of washing-free cherries! Pick a cherry and put it into the mouth. The red one is all sweet; the yellow one is sour mingled with sweet; the green one, you’d better leave it alone, for one green cherry can stimulate your appetite for dinner, but a few more will spoil your appetite and you will not be able to enjoy whatever delicious food.

What I mentioned above is one way to taste cherries in season, yet, I had a better experience in savoring them.

With my hands at back, I picked the cherries one by one by mouth from the tree; with eyes closed, I savored them bunch by bunch. My heart felt cheerful and carefree   when I was leisurely savoring the sweet and sour cherry juice mingled with rain drops, which not only quenched my thirst, but also refreshed me.

The cherry trees were planted by father, thus, I asked him a question puzzling me for a long time:

“It is said that cherries are delicious to taste but difficult to grow, isn’t that correct?”

“No, not exactly. Cherry trees are easy to cultivate, but it is difficult to take care of the ripe fruits.” Father explained to me, pointing to a few crows crouching in other trees around. While we were talking, several crows were swooping down on the red cherries. As father cried out, the birds were scared away flashing through the trees; then, a couple of mature fruits were falling down to the ground. Mother also held a pole to drive away the birds from time to time even when she was at dinner with a bowl in hand.

So it seems that cherries not only attract people to savor but also seduce birds to have a taste.
