    eg:The headmaster gave us leave to go to the concert.
       take (one’s) leave 告别,告辞
       We’re on leave until December.
licence\-nse  n.[c]许可,特许;许可证,执照
permit  n. 执照,许可证
it serves sb. right 活该,罪有应得
    eg:His punishment served him right.
       He fell through the ice,it served him right,for we had told him it was dangerous.
put\set right 纠正;修理好;使痊愈
do right 做得对;不说do sb. right
all right 用以表示同意,赞成等
all right on the night (saying 谚)(指表演等)到时候准能使人满意
    eg:The hall isn’t quite ready for the ceremory yet,but it will be all right on the night.
       举行典礼的大厅尚未完全布置好,但到时候定能准备好
a bit of all right (Brit sl俚) 非常吸引人或讨人喜欢的人或事物
    eg:Dave’s girlfriend is a bit of all right. 戴夫的女朋友很可爱
get sth. right\straight 清楚无误地了解某事物
    eg:Let’s get this right once and for all. 咱们把这个问题彻底弄清楚吧
Let’s get one thing straight—I gives the orders round here, OK ?
咱们得先弄清楚一件事--在这儿得听我的,懂吗?
have one’s heart in the right place 怀有真情或善意
hit\strike the right\wrong note

put\set sb.\sth. right 使某人/事物恢复正常;改正,纠正某人/事物的错误
eg:put a watch right 把手表拨准
   I want to set\put you right on one or two matters. 我想纠正一两个错误
right (you are)! (Brit also right-oh!)(infml口)用以表示同意一项命令,建议或请求,尤用于美式英语表示同意请求
(as) right as rain\as a trivet (infml口)十分健康或正常
start off on the right\wrong foot (with sb.)(infml口)开始做某事物时正确/不正确(尤指人际关系)
    eg:The new student started off on the wrong foot with the teacher by answering back rudely.
       那个新来的学生粗鲁地跟老师顶嘴,一开始就把关系搞僵了
touch the right chord 巧妙地触动某人的感情
shoulder  vt. 肩负,承担
    eg:He shouldered his pack and set off on his walk.
       You must shoulder your responsibilities.
carry  vt. 携带,运载;输送,传送(不用于抽象意义的肩负重担)
for one thing (用于列举理由) 首先,一则
    eg:For one thing there isn’t time.
       for another [thing] we haven’t enough money.
for example 例如
for the time being 眼下,暂时
for the moment  暂时,目前
fall all 虽然,尽管
    eg:For all his talk about sports cars and swimming-pools,he’s just an ordinary bank-clerk.
       别看他大谈汽车跑车和私人游泳池,其实他只不过是个银行的普通职员
be for it 会受惩罚或惹出麻烦
    eg:The headmaster saw me draw the picture on the blackboard—I’m for it now.
       校长看见我在黑板上画画,这下我可惹出麻烦了
come to one’s senses (昏迷后)苏醒过来;恢复理性,醒悟过来
bring…to one’s senses 使头脑正常,使清醒过来
be in one’s (right) senses 头脑正常
be out of one’s senses 神志不清,头脑不正常
wind up 结束,停止,结果,最后(陷入某种状态)(后面可跟名词、形容词、介词短语、现在分词等)
close up 关闭
come up 出现,走上前来
throw up (food) 呕吐;放弃;匆匆盖起(简易房屋)
    eg:The smell of that drain is enough to make one throw up.
       He threw up his job.
       They threw up a temporary building.
fling up 向上抛
break up 打碎,打破;终止,结束(后散去)
start up 惊起,吃惊
build up 逐渐建立;增进,增强;积聚
    eg:He has built up a good business over the years.
bring up 教育,培养
underline  vt. (本义)在……下划线;(引申)强调
    eg:He wrote down the title of the essay and underlined it.
       His refusal to go underlined his dislike of the place.
stress  vt. (以人作主语)强调,着重
    eg:To stress sth. is to call special attention to it.
       He stressed the necessity of being punctual\that they must arrive punctually.
value  vt. (以人作主语)尊重,重视;评价,给……估价
    eg:I valued his advice\my friendship with Constance.
       He valued his property at $10,000.
evaluation  n. 评价,估价
assessment (of\on) n. 估价,评价,看法
exorbitant  adj. (价格)过度的,过高的
excessive  adj. 过多的,过分的,极高的
scream  vi. 发出刺耳的尖叫声;指由于痛苦,、恐惧或惊恐、快乐而发出的尖叫
cry  vi. 喊叫;(鸟兽)叫;vt. 叫喊,为常用语
shout  vi. 呼喊,呼叫;指大喊大叫;不用于因高兴而发生的喊、叫
exclaim  vi.\vt. 为表现强烈感情而大叫
yell 大声叫;因某种原因或为引起注意
squeal 尖叫;较少含感情色彩
bellow 声音低沉地“吼叫,喊”
switch off (将开关)关掉
switch through (把电话)接到(分机上)
switch on 打开(开关)
switch to 转换(话题);转而(生产……)
switch sth. with sb.\sth. 使某人/事物交换位置;转换
switch (sth.) over\round 使某人/事物交换位置;转换
switch (sb.) off (infml口)(使某人)感到乏味,厌烦等
wait on\upon 服侍,侍候;(饭馆服务员为顾客)上饭菜
see to 照料,处理,修理
care for 照顾,照料
look after 照料
    注:后三个动词短语都可用于表示“照顾,照料”,但比较之下,饭店服务员照料顾客最好用wait on\upon
gaze (at) vi. 凝视,注视
glance at 看一眼,扫视
peep (at)  vi. 偷看,好奇地看
glare (at)  vi. 怒目而视
peer  vi. (眯着眼)仔细看,费力地看
    peer through the mist\the darkness
    peer at the small print in a newspaper
scan  vt. 扫描;浏览;仔细看,审视
frown  vi. 皱眉
frown on 对……不赞成,不以为然
    eg:His parents frowned on his staying out late.
disagree (with\on\over\about)  vi. 不同意,有分歧;不一致
despise  vt. 鄙视,看不起
scorn  vt. 轻蔑,鄙视;不屑(做to-v)
    scorn to do\v-ing 不屑于做,不耻于做
incompatible (with) adj. 不相容的;不适宜的
inconsistent (with) adj. 不一致,不相符,不相称
watch out for 提防,注意(寻找)
watch for 留心寻找,小心等候
watchful (for) adj. 注意寻找;提防
alert (to\for) adj. 警惕,提防(to);留神,注意(for)
convenience  n.[u]方便,便利;[c]方便条件,便利条件
    eg:He thinks only of his own convenience.
       Will the time\place suit your convenience?
       at sb’s convenience 在某人方便的时候
       to sb’s convenience 对某人合适
facility  n.[c]便利,容易;(pl.)设备,设施
condemn  vt. 定罪,判处,宣告有罪;谴责
    eg:The judge condemned the criminal to ten years in jail\to the gallows\to a year of hard labour\to spend all his life in jail.
judge  vt. 审判,判决;作裁判(注:宾语多为case\competition等)
    eg:Who is going to judge the next case\the competition.
convict  vt. (经审讯)证明……有罪,宣判犯有……罪     convict sb. of a crime
find  vt. 判定,断定(只用于表示find sb. guilty 断定某人有罪)
    eg:find that it was murder 判断这是一起谋杀
conviction  n.[u]定罪,判罪;表“判决”这一行为,the conviction of sb. 对……的判决
    eg:This is his third conviction.
judgement  n. 审判,判决;表“(作出的)判决”,the judgement of sb. 表示“某人作出的判决”
    eg:the judgement of the cour
    “对某人的判决”应说the judgement on sb.
acute  adj. 锐的(角)(an acute angle 锐角)
sharp  adj. 锋利的,锐利的
    注:acute⑴遭受极大的苦难  eg:There’s an acute shortage of water.严重缺水
             ⑵①(指感觉或感官)敏锐的,深刻的,剧烈的
               ②精明的、有观察力的
               ③(指疾病)急性的
        sharp adj.⑴锋利的,尖锐的
                  ⑵①(指曲线、弯、斜坡等)急转的,陡峭的
                    ②(通常作定语)突然的,急剧的 a sharp drop in prices 价格的暴跌
                                                   a sharp rise in crime 犯罪率的急剧上升
                  ⑶轮廓鲜明的;明显的;清晰的 a sharp outline 清晰的轮廓
                    a sharp photographic image 反差大的影像;in sharp focus 锐聚焦
                    There is a sharp contrast between the lives of the poorest and the richest members of society. 社会上贫富悬殊
                  ⑷(通常作定语)(指声音)尖锐的,刺耳的
                  ⑸(指味道或气味)强烈的,辣的,刺鼻的
                  ⑹刺骨的,凛冽的;剧烈的
                  ⑺灵敏的;敏锐的;机警的  keep a sharp look-out 严密警戒
                  ⑻sharp (with sb.)(derog贬)蓄意批评、中伤等的;尖刻的,严厉的
                  ⑼(通常作定语)迅速的;敏捷的;活跃的 a sharp struggle 激烈的战争
                    That was sharp work. 这件工作干得很利索
                  ⑽(常作贬义)过分精明的,狡猾的,不择手段的
                    a sharp lawer,accountant,etc 精明的律师、会计等
                    She was too sharp for me. 她太精明(我斗不过她)
                  ⑾(通常作定语)(过分)时髦的,漂亮的
                  ⑿(music 音)①(指声音、乐器的音调等)偏高的
                              ②(通常用于名词之后)(指音符)升半音的
                                in the key of C sharp minor 用升C小调
                  ⒀look sharp 赶紧,赶快
                    eg:You’d better look sharp or you’ll be late. 你得赶快,不然就晚了
                       (as) sharp as a needle 非常聪敏的
                       sharp practice 不够诚实的交易手段
virtual  adj. 实质上的,实际上起作用的(尽管非名义上的)无比较等级
    eg:Mr Smith is the virtual president,though his title is secretary.
actual  adj. 无比较等级 实际上的,事实上的,真实的
essential  adj. 本质的,基本的;必要的,必不可少的(to)
true  adj. 真的,真正的;真正的,确实的
              注:虽然virtual,actual和true都有“实际上的,事实上的”意思,但actual和true表示是“真正的,事实上的,而不是假的”,而virtual则表示“虽然名义上不是,但实际上在起着所说的那种作用”
         
          given (to)  adj. 有癖好的,有倾向的
              eg:He is given to drinking.
          liable  adj. 易于……的,有……倾向的,可能的(to-v\to sth.);负有责任的,有义务的(for)
              注:可以人或东西作主语
句型:be liable to-v;
                        be liable to colds\diseases\trouble\infection
                        liable for sb’s debts\for the damage\the repairs of sth. 对……负责
          apt  adj. (习性)易于……的,有……倾向的(to-v)
              注:liable 和 apt 后面跟的不定式多是表示不好或不愉快的事
         
          mess (with sb.)  vi. 干预,打扰,与……捣乱
               注:在这个句型中,被干扰的对象是可能会造成麻烦或危险的人或东西
               eg:We don’t mess with heroin(海洛因) or any of that stuff.
          bother  vt. 打扰,麻烦
          trouble  vt. 使麻烦,使苦恼;vi.麻烦,费神
              句型:trouble sb.
                    trouble to do sth.
                    trouble about\with sth.
          irritate  vt. 使恼怒,使烦躁;使难受,使疼痛
         
          hearing  n.[c](调查委员会等召开的)意见听取会;申辩或发言的机会
              eg:The judge gave both sides a hearing.
                 try to get a hearing with the people in charge
                 The house assassinations committee began hearings on the murder of President John F.Kennedy.
          opportunity  n. 机会,时机
          chance  n. 机会,机遇;可能性,或然性
