Director Francois Ozon Doesn't Shy
Away From His Dark Side —Or His Gay
One
…………
AE: Your films show a wide range of
sexuality, you define yourself as a gay man right?
FO: No, I don't define myself. It's very American to define
oneself. I don't need to define myself because I don't want to be
one thing. I want to be open-minded and you never know what will
happen in your life if you know already.
I think it's always very sad when you hear some gay people saying, “I just want to have sex with this kind of man.” It's always surprising to be suddenly touched by a younger man and after by an older one, black after Chinese.
I like the idea that many things can happen in your life and if you know already exactly what you desire, it's very boring, and I think the desires change during all your life. Maybe I will have a family in ten years, I don't know, and children.
AE: Hey, and you can have one with a
man either way, you never know.
FO: Yes, not yet. I know it's possible in America, not yet in
France.
AE: Oh men can't adopt or have a
surrogate, you can't do that in France?
FO: Not
really, the adoption does not yet allow it, but maybe it
will.
AE: Can you tell me at all about your
relationship--what do you call the person you're with--your lover,
your partner, or what?
FO: My friend.
AE: So is your friend a man or a
woman?
FO: I think it's a man.
AE: You think it's a man
(laughs).
FO: (Laughs) I think so.
AE: How long have you been
together?
FO: Five years.
AE: That's great, do you live
together?
FO: No.
AE: Are you a person who people can
live with?
FO: I like the everyday life but sometimes it's better not to share
too much intimacy.
