Here’s to Jeans

These blue pants have changed
a lot since the 16th century!
Aug. 25th 2008

Look in your closet and you will most likely find at least one pair of blue jeans. Almost everyone wears them for work or play, for comfort or style. Jeans can be bought for just a few dollars or cost hundreds and thousands of dollars.

As a wearer of jeans, you must have heard of Levi’s.
Levi Strauss began supplying clothing to men on the California goldfields in the 1850s. Then in the 1870s, he and friend developed some practical, durable pants, and the Levi’s brand was born. But denim had been around since the 16th century. The word “jeans” probably came from the blue denim clothes worn by sailors from the European city of Genoa. And those sailors’ pants were the inspiration for the world’s denim craze.

Jeans were just considered work clothes until the 1930s. then popular Hollywood Westerns showed jean-clad cowboys, and regular people started to want the pants.
