Slang

still waters run deep     人不可貌相,海水不可斗量
e.g.1. Mark is really quiet, but still waters run deep. He can be a lot of fun once you get to know him.
e.g.2. I didn’t know that Mr. Weng actually had feelings! Still waters run deep. He’s a very nice guy. 

 

odd jobs    杂活儿
e.g.1. We give him odd jobs now and then.
e.g.2. I’ll be gone an hour – I have a few odd jobs to do in downtown.
e.g.3. Would you mind doing a few odd jobs today? Pick up some beer and take out the trash.

 

dirty bargain     肮脏交易,欺骗
e.g.1. What a dirty bargain! The salesman told me that it was a real diamond, but it’s not.
e.g.2. Okay, I will tell you my secret if you tell me yours, I promise, no dirty bargain, only the truth. 

 

in some respects     有点想又有点不想,也可以说
e.g. I’m really excited to start school again, but in some respects, I’m still nervous that I won’t like it.

 

make cutbacks     削减
e.g.1. They’re making cutbacks at the end of this mouth.
e.g.2. Honey, we’ll have to make cutbacks on how much we spend or else we’ll have no more money for our baby.

 

up and go      起身就走
e.g.1. I can’t just up and go.
e.g.2. I have no idea where she is. We were sitting here together one minute and then she just up and went. 

 

on the rebound      做某事以减轻(痛苦)  

do sth. on the rebound
e.g.1. I can’t believe she married him on the rebound.
e.g.2. It’s obvious that he’s on the rebound. He just wants me to be jealous. He doesn’t really like her.
e.g.3 Do you take this job on the rebound? I hope you actually want to work here.

be dying to do       特热切期待干某事
e.g.1. Everyone ‘s dying to see you. 
e.g.2. It’s been so long now since I’ve had my favorite food, the hot – pot. I’m dying to eat it.
e.g.3. I hope I can go see Zhang Xueyou backstage after the show. I know, I am dying to meet him in person!

 

fly off the handle       失控
e.g.1. I sometime seem to fly off the handle for no reason at all. 
e.g.2. I was trying to explain what happened, it was just an accident, but my boss flew off the handle and wouldn’t listen.
e.g.3. I begged him. I just flew off the handle, slapping his face, kicking his ass.

 

the run of things       表示事情运行的规律 / 习惯
e.g.1. Show me the run of things.
e.g.2. Come with me, I’ll show you the run of things here, I’m sure you’re curious where everything is.
e.g.3. We haven’t – quite figured out the run of things here yet. Everything will be ready shortly.

 

terribly       太棒了(adv. 表示程度)
e.g.1. That’s terribly nice of you.
e.g.2. That’s terribly good idea.
e.g.3. I’m not terribly fond of fast food, let’s go get barbecue instead.

 

give away    揭露,出卖
e.g.1. Don’t give away the ending! I want to watch it for myself.
e.g.2. Sorry guys, James gave its away – I already knew you were having a party for me on Friday.

 

have it out with sb.     与某人争执/辩驳
e.g.1. It’s not even worth having it out with Tony, He’ll just say – nothing is wrong.
e.g.2. Listen, I don’t want to have it out with you. Can we just talk about it quietly?

 

no Shakespeare            不善言辞
e.g.1. It is always no Shakespeare, but it is gentle.
e.g.2. Guys, I like Sarah a lot, but I’m no Shakespeare and I’m not going to pretend to be by writing her a bad poem.

 

the whole kit and caboodle       所有的(人 / 事 / 一切)
e.g.1. That’s the whole kit and caboodle.
e.g.2. You can’t just buy one tin,  it comes in a set. You have to buy the whole kit and caboodle.

 

get / be antsy       坐立不安
e.g.1. Don’t you ever be antsy, itch to leave?
e.g.2. Hey, Duran, I’m getting antsy, let’s get out of this house and go do something interesting.
e.g.3. Hey,dude, you seem antsy. Do you want to stay for the whole class or do you want to leave now?

 

Set foot
1.  第一个进某领域的人,初涉者
e.g. He was the first person to set foot on the moon.
2. 到某处
e.g.1. If she ever sets foot in this house, I’m leaving.
e.g.2. I wouldn’t set foot in that restaurant.

 

while I’m at it      同时顺便
e.g.1. I might as well get one of them while I’m at it.
e.g.2. Hey son, since you’re going to the supermarket, why don’t you pick up some vinegar while you’re at it?  
e.g.3. Would you mind seeing if they have the book for me while you’re at it?

 

The whole ball of wax        所有都   

=the whole kit and caboodle
e.g.1. Have you given me the whole ball of wax? I want to know everything?
e.g.2. I know I haven’t been given the whole ball of wax. I wish you could trust me and tell me what’s going on.

 

close, but no cigar        很接近,但差一点儿
e.g.1. So close, but no cigar. I’m sorry you didn’t win the race. Maybe next time.
e.g.2. All the numbers matched except the last one! This always happens to me!

 

be on to sth.      终于明白,渐渐悟出
e.g.1. I’m on to something. Something big!
e.g.2. I think you’re actually on to something, you’re brilliant.
e.g.3. We’re been working on it for weeks. And I think we’re actually on to something. Guys, keep up the good work.
