From "Boyhood with Gurdjieff":

Gurdjieff asked Fritz Peters to tell him how many acorns he saw in the oak tree outside the window.

Peters: "Several thousands."

Gurdjieff: "How many acorns would become trees?"

Peters: "Only five or six."

Gurdjieff: "Perhaps only one, perhaps not even one. Nature makes many acorns but the possibility to become trees exists only for a few. The same applies to man - many men are born, but only few grow. People think it is a waste, but it is not so. The rest become fertilizer, they go back into earth and create the possibility for more acorns * Gurdjieff
