1.for the time being 暂时
For the time being, you will have to share this room with another person. 你暂时得和另外一个人合住这个房间。

2.pick up the bits 收拾残局
It's Tom's mother again who is picking up the bits. 又是汤姆的妈妈在收拾残局了。

3.cost an arm and a leg 价格非常昂贵;费用很大
Eating in hotels costs an arm and a leg. 在饭店里吃饭费用很大。

4.can never be too… 越…越好;再…也不过分
As a teacher, you can never be too patient with slow students. 作为老师,对于落后的学生要耐心再耐心。

5.a pat on the back 赞扬,鼓励
For children, a pat on the back is much more beneficial to their healthy development than blaming them. 对于儿童的健康成长来说,鼓励他们要比责备他们更有益。

6.I'll keep that in mind. 我会记住的。
A: Tom, we are running short of salt. Can you remember to get some when you pass by the grocery store?
B: OK. I'll keep that in mind.

7.Be in the mood 想要做某事
She is not in the mood for playing cards and says she should really be preparing her lecture notes. 她不想打牌,因为她要准备她的演讲稿

I'm sure Rose won't go to the picnic because she has other fish to fry. 我肯定露丝不会去野餐的,她有别的事要做。

9.tighten one's belt 节衣缩食;紧缩开支
If you want to save away money, you'll have to tighten your belt for "saving is getting". 如果你想存些钱,你就得节衣缩食,因为“节省钱就等于挣钱”。

10.fall on deaf ears 未被理睬,未受到重视,没有被听取
She would feel heart-broken if she knew that her advice to you had fallen on deaf ears. 如果她知道你把她的忠告当成耳旁风,她会很伤心的。

11.burn one's bridges 义无返顾,破釜沉舟
I will be willing to burn my bridges if what I do will help change the present situation. 如果我所做的事情能有助于改变目前的情况, 我将义无返顾。

Never say die. Try again and you'll probably succeed. 别灰心,再试一次,你会成功的。

13.make a case for 提出充分的理由

A: Do you know that you hurt her by saying that?
B: I know I shouldn't have said that, but I didn't know what  was wrong with me.
A:你知道你这样说伤害了她吗?

19.the apple of one's eye 某人的掌上明珠
Mary, as the youngest daughter, is the apple of her parents' eye. 作为家中最小的孩子,玛丽是她父母的掌上明珠。

20.bang for the buck 合算,划算
You paid only one thousand dollars for that car? That was really bang for the buck. 那部车你才花了一千美元?简直太划算了。

21.without turning a hair 保持冷静态度
The woman listened to the news of sth. without turning a hair.
那个女人在听到。。。消息时好不动容。

22.have a blind spot 不愿或不能看到的缺点
Every mother has a blind spot about her child. 每个母亲在她孩子的身上总有觉察不出的缺点。

23.to  make a song and dance about something 大惊小怪;小题大做
Jane's parents always make a song and dance about her coming home late,so we'd better be going soon. 简的父母总是对她晚回家大惊小怪的,因此我们最好快点走。
If you keep making a song and dance about my dress,I'll go home. 如果你对我的衣服还是大惊小怪的,我就回家。

24.to drop/explode a bombshell 发布爆炸性消息;做惊人之举;引起惊慌;引起骚动
The police explode a bombshell when they arrested the old banker for stealing money from the bank. 警察已逮捕那个偷盗银行款项的老职员,真叫人大吃一惊。

25.have one's hands full 很忙,应接不暇
Three emergency cases came into the hospital at the same time and the doctors really had their hands full. 三个急诊病人被同时送到医院,医生们真是应接不暇。

26.It's no trouble at all. 一点儿也不麻烦。
A: Sorry to have troubled you so much.
B: It's no trouble at all.
A:真不好意思这么麻烦你。
B:一点也不麻烦。

27.under the weather 不舒服,精神不爽
I had a bad cold, and I'm still a bit under weather. 我得了感冒,现在仍有点不舒服。
Miss Smith? This is Mister Jones here. Could you please cancel my appointments for today? I'm feeling under the weather so I'm going to stay home.
你是史密斯小姐吗?我是琼斯先生。我今天不太舒服,我就呆在家里,不去上班了,请你把我今天的约会取消了吧。

28.out of breath 上气不接下气
When he dashed back, he was already out of breath. 当他急速跑回来时,他已经是上气不接下气了。

29.someone's eyes pop out 惊讶得眼睛都快掉出来了

34.to lose one's cool 沉不住气
The challenger was winning until about the eight round,when he began to lose his cool. 一直到第八回合,挑战者都占有优势,但是以后他沉不住气了。
I shouldn't have gotten angry,but when he started insulting me I lost my cool. 我本来不应该动怒,但是当他开始羞辱我的时候,我沉不住气了。

35.to cook someone's goose 使彻底完蛋
My falling down in the ski trails cooked my goose.I can never make the Olympic team now. 我在滑雪预赛中摔倒,一切希望都化成泡影。我已经绝对进不了参加奥运会的队了。
That scandal cooked his goose.Now it's impossible for him to get elected. 那件丑闻使他彻底完蛋。他已经不可能当选了

36.from the bottom of one's heart 内心深处
Though he is being rude at times, he respects you from the bottom of his heart. 虽然他有时对你有些不礼貌,但在内心深处他还是尊敬你的

37.to have the blues 情绪不好
Leave me alone. I really have the blues today.
离我远点,我今天情绪确实不好。

38.see the light 恍然大悟,同意,诞生, 出世,(书籍)问世
I didn't approve of his action, but he explained his reason and then I saw the light. 起初我并不赞成他的做法,但经过他解释理由之后,我才恍然大悟。

39.to come clean 坦白交待
You'd better come clean. We know you stole the money. Where is it?
你最好是坦白交待,我们知道你偷了钱,藏在什么地方?

40.man-to-man 坦率的,说心里话,说实话,(球赛中)人盯人的
I had a man-to-man talk with him about the problem last night. 昨天晚上我和他对这个话题开诚布公地谈了谈。
As man-to-man, I think you should admit your mistakes. 老实说,我觉得你应该承认自己的错误。

50.to back and fill 出尔反尔/朝三暮四

You shouldn't back and fill.It's time to make your choice. 别犹犹豫豫了。是该你作出选择的时候了。
Those who back and fill at the problem should be got rid of. 那些在这个问题上出尔反尔的人应该被赶出去。

51.Every dog has his day. 人人都有得意的一天。
I know how upset you are that you didn't get the promotion. But don't take it too hard--your turn will come. You know what they say--every dog has his day!

Students who are falling behind their peers at middle school may
not necessarily lag behind them at college.

55.Don't miss the boat! 不要坐失良机!
A: Jack, the bank is lowering deposit interest rates.
B: Yes, maybe it's time to invest my money in securities.
A: Jump to it. Don't miss the boat.
A:杰克,银行正在降低存款利率呢。

56.pop the question 求婚
例句:After the dance party, he popped the question. 舞会过后,他提出求婚。

57.Thank you for having us. 谢谢你请我们做客。
A: I'm afraid I've got to go now. Thank you for having us. We had a good time.
B: It was a pleasure.
A:恐怕现在得走了,谢谢你邀请我们做客,我们玩得很开心。

58.It's up in the air. 尚未决定
A: Jack, have you got that job yet?
B: Not yet. It's up in the air. I haven't made up my mind yet.
