“You’ve Lost Something !”

When a piece of trash flutters to the ground ,one hears a thud deep inside him, doesn’t he ?

What follows is a true story ,although it sounds much like a joke .A lady wearing a somewhat awkwardly long skirt was seen running after a piece of paper on a railway platform. The warm-hearted people there, seeing how anxious she obviously was ,joined in her chase. The paper,as if trying to tease them all ,first flew downwards and then went back up ,like being possessed. This only increased the people’s determination to catch it.They felt sure that it was a priceless asset which, once lost ,would make the lady lose heart altogether. At long last, through the joint effort, the paper was brought into submission. The happy man who captured it triumphantly handed his “trophy”to the lady, and she ,in turn ,thanked everyone heartily and gracefully. Then she took the paper to a nearby garbage can and ,under everyone’s gaze ,dropped it in .This done ,she turned round and said to the people with a smile,“Now ,the trash is in its right place.”

You may be anxious to ask where the story took place.Be a little patient and let me put a question to you first:where do you think such a story won’t happen? To answer this question you and I have sufficient qualifications.

A government official has told me a terribly embarrassing experience during a business trip to Australia. One day his delegation was traveling in a bus in the open country. He ate a banana and carelessly tossed the peel out the windows.it didn’t seem to bother anyone, because all the passengers on the bus were Chinese —even the interpreter was a fellow countryman. However,he neglected one fact —that the driver was an unmistakable Australian! The bus screeched to a halt. The driver quietly hopped off, dashed all the way back, picked up the peel, returned with it just as quietly, and started the bus again. All the delegates looked at each other in sheer dismay. The interpreter said with a shrug ,“Never mind. It’s just as natural for him to pick up the thing as fou you to throw it away!”

“It felt like a resounding slap in my face,”my official friend told me.

In my school there used to be a headmistress of overwhelming charm.Whenever she saw a student litter on campus, she would run up and remind him or her in a friendly manner,“Hey,you’ve lost something!”The baffled student would respond with a grateful smile,“But I haven’t lost anything ,Madam.”When the headmistress pointed to the piece of garbage on the ground, the student would blush profusely, hasten to pick up the garbage and meekly run off.

“You’ve lost something!”— I love to chew on these words every now and then ,trying to fathom the profound meaning hidden beneath them.
