invaluable，valueless
这一对形容词都是来自名词value。一个是在形容词valuable（有价值的）之前加上否定形容词前缀in-；另一个是在名词value（价值）的后面加上否定形容词后缀-less。虽然它们都是加上否定的形容词词缀，意义刚好相反。
Invaluable的意思是“非常贵重的”，（highly valuable，precious），其同义词是priceless。例：
Your services are invaluable to us．你对我们的帮助是极其宝贵的。
This jade bracelet is really an invaluable to article．
这件玉镯确实是非常贵重的物品。
Valueless的意思是“毫无价值的”，其同义词是worthless。例：
That book is valueless．那本书毫无价值可言。
现将这两个字用在一个句中，以便区别：
The book that he considered valueless proved invaluable to us．
他认为毫无价值的那本书对我们说来却是无价之宝。
请注意，costly和invaluable的内涵并不一样，前者是“某物因精美或珍奇而昂贵”，后者则指“价值大得无法以金钱衡量。”

join，join in，join to
join的基本词义是“加入某个党派或社会团体，从而成为该党派或团体的一员”。例：
When did they join the conservation organization？
他们是什么时候参加环保组织的？
The prodigy joined the International Association of Poets，
Playwrights，Editors，Essayists and Novelists（PEN）when he was only fourteen years old．
这位天才在十四岁时便成为国际笔会会员。
join in的意思是“参加某项运动或活动”，例如参加讨论、游行、罢工等。例：
More than ten thousand workers have joined in this strike．
有一万多名工人参加了此次罢工。
All of us will join in the celebration of the victory of World War Ⅱ．我们全都参加这次庆祝世界二次大战胜利的活动。
There were many extracurricular activities，but Peter never joined in．尽管有很多课外活动，但彼德从不参加。
join to的意思是“和…接触”、“与…相连”。例：
Our house is joined to Mr．So's．我们的房子和苏先生的房子相连。
请注意，join之后如接 oneself再加to，就表示“参加”、“加入”的意思。如：
To my surprise，Mr．Li joined himself to the opposite party last month．令我惊奇的是，上个月李先生竟然参加了反对党。

last，latest
这两个词都是late的最高级。用作形容词时，last 在意义上和latest有点相近，实际上，它们的涵义和使用场合是不一样的。
Last指连续顺序中的最后一个，一般译作“最后的”，有时译为“上一次的”或“过去的”。last的对语是first。例：
The last time I saw them was in Paris last year．
我最后一次看见他们是去年在巴黎。
The last letter of the alphabet is Z．字母表的最后一个字母是Z。
I don't know whether you have received my last letter or not．
我不知道你是否已收到我上一封信。
Latest表示时间上的“最近”，一般译作“最近的”、“最新的”或“最晚的”。latest的对语是earliest。例：
The latest news about the Mideast is the beginning of another round of peace-talks．关于中东的最新消息是另一回和谈已展开。
What is the latest fashion in town？城中的最新时尚是什么？
This is his latest novel；we hope it is not his last．
这是他最新的著作，我们希望这不是他的最后一部。
请注意，last year、last month、last week、last night都是时间状语，它们的前面无需使用介词，但last century却是例外，我们必须说in the last century或 during the last century。介词in和during不能省略。
