Pubs in Britain

(2006-09-07 10:38:34)
Pubs are important part of British life. Even very small villages nearly always have a pub. Bubs often sell food or snacks as well as drinks. Food that is considered typical pub food is scampi(kind of shellfish) and chips.
Many pubs have two or more different bars. The public bar is usually plainly furnished and often has a pool table and dartboard. The saloon bar (or lounge bar) is comfortable and well-furnished and is the bar that is usually used by men and women drinking together. Some bars also have a children's room or a garden where children can sit.
There is no quicker way into the heart of British culture than to enter one of her pubs.
A local pubs is not only a place to drink, it incorporates(吸纳,融合) all aspects the neighborhood, acting as a community center. The pub is a place where young people mingle(交往,混合). Where children play games in the garden as their parents catch up on(事后得到关于...的消息) the neighborhood gossip. A place for old people sit and chat about the "good old days". Businessmen stop by for a brief lunch, the only break they get in a hectic day. The pub is also where students met to celebrate the end of exams and old college friends gather to relive(回味,在想象中再体验) memories. The pub is a place for sports. It's a place where the weary(疲倦的,困乏的) football team comes to have a pint(or core) after a match on sunday afternoon. A place to watch "the match" or get racing tips. A place where bets are won and lost. A place to go to party or just to read the paper in a quiet corner.
The essence of a good pub(which modern buildings hardly ever achieve) is a feeling of intimacy(亲密,亲近). It must have nooks and crannies, corners and snugs(暖和的), where conversations and assingnations(幽会,约会) can take place without the whole world listening in.
Public houses or pubs go by a number of names, tavems, inns, ale houses, the local, the boozer(alcohol), the rub-a-dub. Whatever the name you can bet the atmosphere is one of warmth and hospitality.
