扩展阅读·From apartments to houses (History)
Many people dream of moving out of apartment houses and into their own houses. When World War Ⅱ ended in 1944,thousands of returning soldiers were ready to get married and start families and they needed places to live. There weren't enough houses for them. Some of them crowded into their families' apartments. Others lived in attics, garages, or basements. But these soldiers had fought a war for their country and they wanted something better.
In 1947, Abraham Levitt and Sons started to build small houses on an old potato farm on Long Island near New York City. In four years they built 17,447houses. They named this new place Levittown. The government helped the soldiers borrow money to purchase houses there. For many families, it was cheaper to buy a house (only $58 a month) than to live in an apartment in the city. The families who moved in there were living the "American Dream".
One early buyer says: "I bought a new 1950 Levittown ranch home. Each house had GE appliances, a Bendix washer and its own big 12- inch Admiral television set. Wow, this was a real selling feature, especially for me and my wife. To be able to move into a new home with all these new luxury items… was unbelievable."
