Tony Jiang and His Multiple Roles--A Talk with Mr. World 2007

Summer has arrived. Lush tree leaves seem greener under the dazzling sunbeams; high on the branches, cicadas sing at the top of their lungs to announce the arrival of the scorching hot season, and people on the street move at a quicker pace to escape the heat. However, it is high time to vacation in the southern Hainan Island, where tourists, away from the maddening crowd in the cities, unwind in the embrace of pristine sand beaches and stunning natural scenery.

Sanya is a fortunate city for Tony Jiang, where he won the second runner-up of the recent Mr. World 2007. The Shanghai native was supposed to play an active role in international hotel management, being a graduate of the prestigious Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne in Switzerland. But it turns out that he has advanced to the world stage as Mr. Shanghai, Mr. China P R and now Mr. World. How has the “shining star” planned his life and career?

Standing before us is a good-looking young gentleman. The understated elegance in his manners is juxtaposed with the attentiveness of an hotelier and sharpness of an entrepreneur. As a matter of fact, Tony Jiang had already set up his own hotel investment and management consulting business; it was in 2004, after he returned to China.

GRAND HOTELS: Nice to meet you, Tony. First of all, my congratulations for your victory in the Mr. World 2007. Why did you attend the Contest?
Tony Jiang: Because I am the champion of Mr. China P R 2006, so I competed for the title of Mr. World on behalf of China. It is a great luck, and honor too. As one of the world’s most popular contests for men, Mr. World is a contest of masculine beauty. Its winners are healthy, brave, thoughtful and conscientious young men who set a model for their contemporaries. It is the first time for China to host the event, in which contestants from 56 different countries and regions competed with one another in a full range of categories such as physical agility, willpower and physique. Test items include surviving in rainforests and rafting. It taught me quite a lot.

GRAND HOTELS: Our magazine covered in May of the Crowne Plaza Sanya, which is the Official Hotel for the contest. How do you feel about this hotel? And about Sanya?
Tony Jiang: Sanya is a hospitable leisure city; I am fond of it, and this fondness is growing day by day. Today I am dressed in a characteristic Hainan fashion, see? The Crowne Plaza Sanya has become my home in Sanya. We contestants had lived here throughout the contest, for more than 40 days, during which period the hotel had taken good care of us, making us feel right at home. Here I’d like to thank the hotel and the staff for the first-class service we have enjoyed. The Chinese-accent architectural style, outstanding service and profound hotel culture has appealed to me so that I can’t bear to leave. What’s more, Robin Edwards (General Manager) and Philip Wei (Director of Sales and Marketing) have become great friends of mine, and we’ve been in contact since.

GRAND HOTELS: You had studied overseas. No sooner had you returned than you took part in the Mr. Shanghai contest, and you won! What made you decide to attend this contest, and the later contests of Mr. China P R and Mr. World?
Tony Jiang: I’d say it was a mere coincidence. I returned in 2004, just in time for Mr. Shanghai recruitment; three days later, I signed up. The motive was quite simple. Having been abroad for so many years, I just wanted to meet more people and make more friends, and I never expected I’d win. So all I did was to keep my mind even and enjoy the fun and accomplishments. As to Mr. China P R, actually it was my staff who signed me up, so I was not nervous at all, and wow, champion again, which entitled me to competing for Mr. World on behalf of China, at last.

GRAND HOTELS: In which aspects do you think you excel your fellow contestants?
Tony Jiang: Strong social ability, probably. I like to communicate with people, and naturally would make friends very actively. I think little of success or failure; that’s why I feel peaceful at heart. I think one would behave more naturally and feel more at ease if in a sincere, optimistic and relaxed state of mind. I would also give credit to the attentive and serious character of a hotel man. Never had I overlooked one single detail during Mr. World 2007; I was busy and enjoyed myself enormously.

GRAND HOTELS: What are you busying yourself with at the moment, now that the Contest was over?
Tony Jiang: At present, I devote 50% to 60% of the energy to the show business, hosting programs, shooting TV commercials, or present in events and parties. In addition, I assist in organizing Miss World 2007, which will take place in Sanya as well. To promote the City of Sanya in Japan, in which my company is expert, is also one of my obligations, and we expect some success by the end of the year. For the moment we concentrate on the segmentation of tourist products in the hope of making the city more appealing.

GRAND HOTELS: Since you have your own business to attend, how do manage to balance the two roles, namely, performer and boss?
Tony Jiang: It is a problem, as the two identities are completely different. As a performer, I am obliged to put in unlimited passion and zeal, leading a high-profile life. As an entrepreneur, however, I should lower the tone and keep my head cool so that I can go through all sorts of difficulties calmly. That said, I still enjoy my current lifestyle very much, given that the two sides complement each other, and combine to expand my social circles.

GRAND HOTELS: You have shot commercials for many big brands such as Ford and Redoxon. What criteria do you follow? Are you interested in shooting a film or TV drama?
Tony Jiang: I only advertise for good, reliable products, and big brands are a guarantee of outstanding quality and good credit. I feel less inclined to shoot a film/TV drama, which usually takes a longer time; but I would be more than happy to have a try if the work is good and the role indeed suits me. To be a good actor is one of my dreams; I would work hard to attain to the goal. I believe I’d accomplish what I am really interested.

GRAND HOTELS: About your dreams, can you elaborate on that?
Tony Jiang: One, have a hotel of my own; now I’m working towards it. Two, donate to a School of Hope; it’s been routine for me to visit some poor kids every time I come to Sanya. Three, be a good actor and work seriously.

GRAND HOTELS: You have studied a hotel-related major, and have received professional trainings in hotels both in Shanghai and overseas countries. In doing business you’ve also stayed in lots of hotels. How will you compare the hotels in China and in other counties?
Tony Jiang: I can see little difference in terms of hotel facilities; ours are even better. However, Chinese hotels are inferior in the quality of service and the awareness to serve due to various reasons. For example, hotels in China would, more often than not, focus on luxury facilities rather than on staff training, which is precisely the most important factor. Secondly, sterility in corporate culture has deprived some hotels of the comprehension that service is the backbone to sustain a hotel. Thirdly, shortage in hotel executives and in talent reserve is evident, considering that China market has been soaring in recent years, with a good many new hotels in operation and still more to come.

GRAND HOTELS: Which hotels do you prefer? Are you a follower of branded hotels?
Tony Jiang: I do, in most cases. It is not necessarily to be an expensive one, but should be a brand that I know, for I’d be familiar with the environment and service which is somewhat guaranteed by the brand name. In the case of smaller individual hotels, cleanness is above everything, not only for me but for all other travelers, I believe. Only in a clean environment can I feel relieved to have a rest.

GRAND HOTELS: We find that you’ve trained in the Food & Beverage Department. Do you love cooking?
Tony Jiang: Cooking is one of my favorites. I had got a cook’s license for Chinese food, so when I was in Switzerland, I invited classmates and teachers to my place every weekend and cooked for them. It was huge fun. But now I don’t have time to cook that much.

GRAND HOTELS: Any plan for the next two years?
Tony Jiang: I would focus on the tourism project, which is in progress at the moment, and work on establishing a couple of small hotels, one of which is probably to open in Hainan next year.

Through the above dialogue we get to know a versatile Mr. World who straddles two diverse fields at ease, shifting roles between the entertainment circle and the business world. Free at heart and full of passion, he is a sober thinker and intelligent doer who pursue doggedly the so-called quality lifestyle.

We anticipate Tony Jiang’s next success.
