这阵子小行那边修路,得到明基医院站坐地铁。从96路上下来之后,得横穿马路,多少有点危险。好在每次在这站下车的人都不少,大家成群结队地过马路,倒也有惊无险。想到以前看National
Geographic频道讲动物的节目时经常听到的一句话:There's safety in
numbers.
一查字典,果然是个idiom,是这样解释的:
Something that you say which means if people do something difficult
or unpleasant together, they are less likely to get harmed or
blamed
E.g. Working on the
principle that there's safety in numbers, we decided we should all
go and complain together.
前两天乘地铁,看到一位母亲带着一个金黄色头发、皮肤雪白的孩子,乍看象白种人,但估计多半是白化病患者。周围乘客以异样的眼光望着他俩,那母亲却很开朗地和小孩说笑,快下车时还把孩子一把扛上肩头。下了车,把孩子放下来,让他自己走,嘴里还喊着口令:“一二一,一二一”。她的举动,让我想起《阿甘正传》里阿甘的母亲,用充满自信的嗓音对自己略微弱智(用她自己的话说是“a
bit on the slow side”)的儿子说:“You are no
different.”
