LESSON 10  MAY I HAVE THE SODA, PLEASE?

SCENE ONE: THE STUDIO

CHRIS:      Oh… I thought you were somebody else.

MODINE:     Jake, perhaps?

CHRIS:      I guess you know a lot about everything that happens here.

MODINE:     It’s my job

CHRIS:      My appointment with you wasn’t till later.

MODINE:     I had a bit of time so I thought I’d talk to you now,

            If that’s all right.

CHRIS:      I was waiting for Jake.

MODINE:     I won’t be long.

CHRIS:      Who knows if he’s coming anyway? So, are you hungry?

MODINE:     Yes. As a mtter of fact, I am.

CHRIS:      Do you want some pizza?

MODINE:     Thank you.

CHRIS:      Could you please hand me a plate?

MODINE:     Delighted.

CHRIS:      Here’s a slice for you.

MODINE:     Thank you. Would you mind handing me a napkin?

CHRIS:      Sure. Do you want some soda?

MODINE:     No, thanks. I’d like a cup of coffee.

CHRIS:      The coffee machine is around the corner.

MODINE:     I saw it when I came in. The coffeepot is empty.

CHRIS:      I could make some more, if you like.

MODINE:     No. That’s OK.

CHRIS:      So… you’re not at all what I expected.

MODINE:     No?

CHRIS:      Nope. I thought you’d be some guy in a rumpled raincoat.

MODINE:     No rumpled raincoat. I have to ask you some questions now.

CHRIS:      Sure.

MODINES:    Who do you think has been sabotaging the station?

 CHRIS:     I don’t know. I’m totally confused.

First, I thought it was Terry. Then I thought it was Mike. Then for a second, I even thought it was Jake. It’s definitely not Rita.

MODINE:    Good thinking . May I have the soda, please?

CHRIS:     Sure. Here a glass… How’s the pizza?

MODINE:    Very good.

CHRIS:     Glad you like it. So, who do you think did it?

MODINE:     You.

CHRIS:      What?

MODINE:    You were around every time it happened.

You have no vested interest in the station.

CHRIS:     This is so unfair of you. I don’t know how you could possibly think that I had anything to do with it.

MODINE:   Come on, Chris. You had access to the editing room.

What were you doing here late one night?

CHRIS:     Was that you sneaking around that night?

MODINE:    You’re the one under investigation.

CHRIS:     I had nothing to do with any of this!

MODINE:    Then what were you doing here by yourself that night?

CHRIS:     I was working on a project.

MODINE:    At eleven o’clock at night?

Why couldn’t you do the project during the day ?

CHRIS:     What do you mean?

MODINE:    How well do you know Thomas Ames?

CHRIS:     Thomas Ames? What are talking about?

MODINE:    I don’t know. That’s what I’d like you to tell me.

CHRIS:    Well, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I had nothing to do with it. Why don’t you ask Jake or Mike? Why don’t you talk to Terry? He’s always working late in the editing room, you know.

MODINE:  Actually, I didn’t know that.

Thanks for answering the questions. I knew you would be helpfur. And thank you, too, for the pizza and the soda. A delightful dinner at the

conference table. I’ll be around to see you again. By the way…

CHRIS:     Yes.

MODINE:    I like your hair.

CHRIS:     Oooh, that makes me so mad!
