Civilized Behavior--A Proper Sense Of Honor And
Shame
Good
afternoon,ladies and gentlmen:
China’s economy is rising up at a soaring speed. However, at present, the Chinese people's state of being civilized is quite a big concern for us. It does not match the development of China's economy. Therefore, it is meaningful and significant to talk about civilized behavior. As a university student, I am very happy to share my own experiences and understandings with you.
Last year, I went to Korea as an exchange student. I saw in some public places, some posters are written only in Chinese, such as no smoking in public, no photos, no spitting and so on. Obviously, they are only for the Chinese people.

Actually, in
many foreigners' eyes, the Chinese people do not observe social
etiquette. Many of us may feel angry—China is the land of courtesy
and propriety! But, after thinking twice, we will find that,
unfortunately, we do not deserve the fame now. On the day when Hong
Kong Disney Park opened, some Chinese inland visitors took off
their shoes and socks in the park and smoked in non-smoking area.
This appeared in newspaper the next day and soon arose a hot
discussion about the Chinese nationals’ cultivation situation. Let
us check out whether we have done the followings before: throwing
away garbages here and there, spitting everywhere, jumping the
queue, going through a red light and so on. Is this the etiquette a
civilized person or a civilized country should have? We have to
reflect.
It seems that we have focused much on the education of civilized behavior. But most of them failed. Therefore,
etiquette education is a vacuum in most schools. Many students even
think that we need not learn how to be a civilized person. My job
is only for exams. See?
How to change foreigners’ bad impressions of us? How to recreate China’s figure as a great civilized country?
I think, etiquette, should be essentials for a person, a school, a society and a country. So, we could do from the following 4 aspects.
First, we should carry on the Chinese traditional merits and cultivate a person when it is only a baby, combing parents’ good examples. This will help little children develop a good habit.
Second, at school, etiquette education should be put at the same level as or a higher level than academic education. It is hard to imagine that a student who has a high academic record but uncivilized behavior will be a brilliant person.
Third, a fine social atmosphere should be created, treating civilized behavior as an honor and uncivilized behavior as a shame. Meanwhile, with the help of public media, this atmosphere could be spread and expanded.
Fouth, our government should make some ethic regulations and publicize it. And some punishment rules can be made to help people change their bad habbits.
Ladies and gentlemen, 2008 is coming. It is an opportunity to show China’s 5000-year history to the world. Let us cultivate good habits of civilized behavior. I am sure we will win the respect of the world. Let us make 2008 more beautiful!
Let us move now, from every little thing; let us influence everyone surrounding us and let us create a whole new world.
Come on, friends, let us be the creator of this new world!
Thank you very much!
