About FOCUS ON CHINA: An Exhibition of CC Licensed Photographs of China (II)

By ZHU Handong

The second “Focus on China” Exhibition of CC Licensed Photographs is organized by Creative Commons China Mainland, and co-organized by Inter Art Center & Gallery of 798 Art Zone. This exhibition aims at promoting among Chinese photographers the idea of sharing culture advocated by Creative Commons Licenses (“CC Licenses” in short), a leading force in the global campaign of opening and sharing.

CC Licenses originate from Creative Commons Organization (“CC” in short), which is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 in the United States. Creative Commons China Mainland is the official local project in China Mainland. CC Licenses transform the “all rights reserved” model of traditional copyright protection to a more flexible model of “some rights reserved”. CC License is very simple in its way of authorization, particularly suited to the new requirements of digital copyright protection and utilization, therefore widely recognized by the public throughout the world. Since the official launch of CC licenses in 2002, CC has become an extensive online communication platform and gathered massive CC-licensed resources, including pictures, videos, audios, works of art and educational resources. According to the statistics of CC International, CC-licensed works were up to 400 million at the end of 2010. Famous websites like Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, YouTube and Flichr are all major users of CC Licenses. Among Chinese photographers, nphoto.net, yupoo.com, tuchong.com and some other online photography community have also adopted CC Licenses. CC-licensed works can be easily found and used on these platforms.

This second “Focus on China” exhibition is part of the art promotion plan of Creative Commons China Mainland. The art promotion plan of CC China Mainland aims to spread CC licenses and the idea of legal sharing and remixing in the community of artists, musicians and photographers, to provide more platforms for CC-licensed works, and to promote the international communication and cooperation of Chinese modern culture and art as well as cultural diversity and protection. The first “Focus on China” exhibition presented CC-licensed photos in China to the international CC community during the 2008 CC Summit (iSummit’ 08) in Sapporo, and was widely acclaimed.

The public collection of works for this “Focus on China” Exhibition has got enthusiastic response from the photographers. In the collection time of a month, nearly 300 photographers submitted about 4000 photos, which further confirms the recognition to CC Licenses and the idea of sharing among Chinese photographers. We hereby extend our sincere gratitude to the three renowned experts of photography, Mr. BAO Kun, Ms. CHEN Xiaobo and Mr. NA Risong, who have worked as the judges for this exhibition. After serious selection and evaluation of the judges, the works of 30 photographers have been selected, which cover various topics like urbanization, migrant workers, left-behind children, empty nesters, and environment pollution. The photographers at exhibition are from all over China, who observe China from their own eyes. They recorded the visual segments of the times, which will become the cultural code to help interpret modern China for the future.
