1.The Beach

In a sandy chamber known as the "beach," a wave rolls across a wall painted (and repainted) by cataphiles in the style of Japanese printmaker Hokusai. Such works can take hundreds of hours—the painting but also the carrying in of supplies.

2.A federally protected sand tiger shark and its entourage of cigar minnows haunt the waters near the wreck of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Spar, south of Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina.

3.California—Like a high-speed Cupid's arrow, an air-rifle pellet pierces the heart of a rose at some 800 feet per second. The flower, plucked from a garden and flash frozen in liquid nitrogen, shatters in a spray of petal fragments.

4.Light Touches Dark

Night falls on the famously well lit city, which spreads out over an underground labyrinth of immense scope and some danger.

5.Upholstered with luminous sponges and corals, the bridge of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Duane attracts schools of smallmouth grunts—and divers. The ship was intentionally sunk in 1987 off Key Largo to create an artificial reef 120 feet deep.

7.Skulls rest atop an inscription revealing the original resting place of some of the first of the six million residents of the Paris catacombs: the Cemetery of the Innocents. The cemetery, which sat at what is now Les Halles in central Paris, was emptied between 1786 and 1788; up to a thousand years of human remains were dumped into an old quarry. The bones from other cemeteries soon followed. Some of France's greatest luminaries, including Rabelais and Robespierre, are believed to lie somewhere in the massive ossuary.

8.A poppy bulb oozes opium paste in a field in Badakhshan Province. To harvest opium, farmers score the bulbs and then wait for the sticky paste to dry before scraping it into containers. Most of the opium is pressed into bricks and sent to refineries to be made into heroin, which is then smuggled out of Afghanistan. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that Afghan opium kills more people worldwide—up to 100,000 per year—than any other drug.

9.A gray triggerfish peers into the camera as it hovers in front of old chicken-transport pens—one of many permitted artificial reefs that benefit recreational fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico.

10.Japan—Scarlet greater flamingos and their Chilean relatives get cozy at the Sapporo Maruyama Zoo. The birds' color arises from carotenoid pigments in their algae-and-crustacean diet, often supplemented in captivity.

11.A day after the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg was sunk, a diver descended to inspect the ship, which landed perfectly upright.

12.The massive supports of oil and natural gas platforms provide reef habitat for fish like this tessellated blenny in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico.
