Reading instruction has always been attached great importance to English teaching. Thus the key to improve the English proficiency of students is to enhance their reading skills. English syllabus of senior middle school states: English teaching should emphasize students’ ability to communicate in English. It is also significant to turn the basic knowledge into language skills and English communicative competence. In the comprehensive training of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, teachers should focus on improving students’ reading ability.

The compiling of the new textbooks well reflects this request. Compared with those of junior middle schools, the content of reading in the textbooks of senior middle schools increased notably, with the notion of improving listening, speaking, writing through reading. The first text in each unit is in the form of dialogue, serving as a link between the previous and the next text. It could be utilized as materials for both listening and oral practice, with less difficulty and less new words than second and third text. Though the main content in the fourth text is writing, reading is always been put in the first place.

From the old to the new textbooks, to effectively improve the quality and effieiency of the reading class is always seen as an important question for English teachers in senior middle school. Reading is an important way to understand and absorb imformation, which could provide students with more abundant education and teaching resources. Through reading, students could expand their horizon, enrich language knowledge, increase vacabulary and get to know the culture and society of English speaking countries.

 

Reflecting on the status quo of English reading instruction of senior middle school, I thought teachers should integrate knowledge teaching, discourse structure knowledge, background knowledge into their reading structions. I believe it is imperative to improve the work in the following areas:

1.      The teaching of grammar

2.      Students ability to analyze discourse

A.      To focus and activate the background knowledge.

B.      To grasp the genre of each discourse

C.     To analyze the textual structure of each discourse

D.     To study and understand words and sentences in the context

E.      To train the understanding ability

When improving teaching methods, teachers should be aware that it is important for students to become the subject in reading. The process of reading is a proactive and creative process in which language and thinking interact with each other. We often neglect this process and deprive the students of their thinking time. No wonder the result of reading couldnt live up to our goal. To mobilize the initiative of learning and improve students reading ability, I adopt the form of discussion and Q&A in teaching reading skills:1. Discussion: between teacher and each student, whole class discussion or group discussion. 2. Q&A: It is an important means in reading intruction and an entry point which could help to understand and appreciate articles.

To conclude, reading comprehension is the embodiment of the integrated use of knowledge of English. Reading instruction is to accomplish the transformation from knowledge to ability. From a macro point of view, teachers should play a role as a instructor, and students themselves are the actors. In fact, only by understanding the main point could one speak out. Therefore, teachers have the responsibility to make students enjoy reading, regard it as pleasure rather than a burden so as to enable students to improve reading ability.
