The old saying is that laughter is the best medicine. But, are comedies or funny TV shows necessary for a good laugh?
No, according to a Czech doctor, Karel Nespor. In fact, Nespor promotes laughter as medicine and has written a book “The Healing Power of Laughter”. He believes that with a little training, anyone can laugh at simple, everyday events and enjoy better relationships, less tension and a healthy mind. Here are some of his suggestions on laugh training:
As soon as you get up in the morining, smile at your face in the mirror. This can make you feel silly, and smile even more.
When you’re bored or anxiously waiting, think up funny things. For example, when standing in an airport queue think of Tom Hanks’ role in “The Terminal”, a man who suddenly loses his national identity and has to sleep at an airport.
Laugh at your own fears, laziness or depression. In other words, find humour in your thoughts, no matter how unpleasant. Greet them like an old, funny friend, and you will get further away from bad feeling.
At other times, Nespor says, laughter need not be lonely, “Smile more often at your friends and relatives,” he says. “Point out funny things to each other, tell each other humorous stories, and laugh together a lot.”
To keep funny feelings alive, Nespor discourages dark entertainment such as horror movies. He also warns against laughing at sensitive people who may feel hurt. “Making others unhappy may reverse the health benefits of laughter.” he said.
