A Scene on the Red Sea
Sun Fuxi

The sun finished his mission of an all-day-long illumination, and appeared to be
full of majesty and glory when everything on earth was bidding him a farewell.
With a red gown on, he looked gloriously radiant upon the embattling of rosy
clouds. He then put on the uniform whose color was the same as the skipper’s,
and waited for orders. On the sky-big round mirror there rippled quiet billows,
with the same rhythm far and near, singing the praises of his merits and virtues
while saying sorry for his departure.

Suddenly the scenery changed. Rosy clouds moved, singing and dancing in haste. I
gazed in a trembling fear at the universe to see how it changed. All of a
sudden, the sun hid himself behind a purple cloud. The sea paled and in a rush
did it turn gloomy; the colorful clouds held their breath in terror. Thousands
of golden rays penetrated through the clouds, enabling the humans to get the
last grace. Yet he came out again, with the intension to soothe people’s
sentiment towards him after his leave by concealing himself.

Looking down, I saw myself full of splendor. As I felt gratified yet ashamed, I
turned around and saw my back reflected in the sea from above the boat.
Following him, I discovered the round moon behind the purple curtain in the
distance. It was extremely unbelievable that his arrival was out of the greeting
of my shadow!

Born a beauty, she was too shy to have her own presence in the world. She
unveiled the curtain, stepped upwards lightly, yet hesitated while looking
around and finding everything in peace. The sea, as soft as a vast of blue-green
velvet carpet, chanted with the rise and fall of the breeze; the thin mist,
serving as a foil to the bright moon through its purple silk backcloth, seemed
graceful all the more. With blue-green clouds tending her aside and peach
blossoms covering her upside, she was prepared for her inspiring career at this
time.

Gradually, I looked up into the sky. The rosy clouds turned light and bluish by
degrees, and moved downwards in a curve through the sky, while the bluish sky
turned light and reddish, with the sun in between. Having the moon and the sun
on both sides of our boat, we were heading towards the south… It was the first
time that we could tell our direction after sailing on the sea for nine days.

I was courageous enough to savor all visible colors, and sober enough to swallow
all brilliance. I was imbued with inward joy for my friends, since they could
now see me involved in this immense universe full of glory and excellence!

Bit by bit, the point of sun shadow above the water was getting connected with
the round ball of the sun, and left together with it. With the sun ready to
part, nobody could detain him. On the empty stage only stayed the bright little
cloud, glistening before the admirable setting and listening to the applause
from all of the audience.

The moon appeared so round and mellow that even pearls and jade were far from
comparable. She had risen highly, far brighter than what she was like at the
beginning. Being illuminated by her, my shadow was reflected into endless
farness and caught up with the sun. Moonlight, as the return of the sunlight,
was quite stylish in nature and unwilling to behave in the same way as the sun.
A cool draught passed by and waved her skirt, yet her eye was even more limpid.
Gently stroking all natural creatures around her and instilling her own soul
into them, she made them fill in the poetic verses and intone her new tune.
Nothing but brightness and coolness floated inward from the air and water,
bringing comfort and rest to us. We stayed in this way, and not until the sun
came again did we begin our work.
