“西成东就——知识分子的美学语境”展览由《新周刊》主笔、诗人胡赳赳先生策划,参展艺术家共12位。其中徐悲鸿、潘玉良是二十世纪初中国第一批留法艺术家的杰出代表,他们引进并极大的推动了西方油画技术在中国的发展;林岗、伍必端、钱绍武三位先生是二十世纪五十年代由国家选派到前苏联列宾美术学院学习油画、版画、雕塑的艺术家。徐冰、陈箴、黄永砯、谷文达、秦玉芬、王智远、冰逸则为二十世纪八、九十年代以来到海外发展的艺术家,他们代表着中国当代艺术的一种力量。本次展览旨在通过同时展出三代艺术家的作品,以此来展示中国当代艺术的渊源及发展脉络。

BeiThe curator of the exhibition “West to East –
The Aesthetic Context of Intellectuals” is Hu Jiujiu,
chief journalist of New Weekly and a famous poet.
There are 12 artists in this exhibition. Among them, Xu Beihong and
Pan Yuliang are renowned artists studied in France in the first
half of the 20th century. They introduced western oil painting to
China and did much to develop it. Lin Gang, Wu Biduan and Qian
Shaowu are artists who were designated by the government to study
oil painting, print and sculpture in the Repin Academy of Fine Arts
in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. Xu Bing, Chen Zhen, Huang
Yongping, Gu Wenda, Qin Yufen, Wang Zhiyuan and Bingyi are artists
who went abroad to promote their art in the 1980s and 1990s. They
represent the power of Chinese contemporary art. Through this
exhibition, we aim to show the artworks of these three generations
of artists simultaneously, and so reveal the origins and developing
texture of Chinese contemporary art.
We can regard artists of the first generation as the introducers
of modern painting and modern art. Their contributions and
aesthetic education clarified the social movement of western
painting and they established new systems. The pace of Chinese
modern and contemporary art began to stride forward. Artists of the
second generation established the “Aesthetics of the People’s
Republic of China”. After they achieved their established
historical missions, they returned to explore new relationships and
new dimensions between art and life. The third generation has a
different experience and purview, but Chinese humanistic values and
the sources of its civilization are the roots of their art. They
have created new relationships, connections and links between
themselves and international contemporary art. They preview and
