i Tao is the traditional transliteration of the Chinese character道(spelt Dao in Chinese Pinyin), the great Way of Heaven, or the ultimate law of the Universe, which governs as well as gives form to器 (spelt Qi in Pinyin), the Vessel, which denotes necessary physical existence.
ii Ceremony (礼, spelt Li in Pinyin) concerns principles (decrees, laws and regulations) that maintain order and organization of society; Music (乐, spelt Yue in Pinyin), by bringing out human goodness, is believed to be capable of arousing a harmonious feeling among people and contributes to a unified harmonious nation. ‘Ceremony and Music’ (“礼乐”), a term roughly approximating to the idea of the legal / moral code and cultural values, have together been the two fundamental tenets of government that most rulers in the traditional Chinese society have upheld, adopted and applied, since they were first introduced in the early Western Zhou Dynasty.
iii The name of the Academy (and later motto of the University)求是(spelt Qiu-Shi in Pinyin), meaning Seeking Truth, happens to coincide with the University motto of Harvard – Veritas, which means Truth.
iv Kan Repeated is the Kan Hexagram, symbolic of pitfalls or dangers. It is the hexagram of Shui, the water, which, in its context in易经 (The Book of Changes) and the interpretations thereof, represents such qualities as sincerity, perseverance and due action that should lead him to ultimately prevail and triumph in the face of obstacles or dangers.
v This refers to the process of learning whereby道, the Way, is eventually attained to. Here the Way is understood to be a reference to the teachings of the Sage, a morally correct way of conduct and life, and, for that matter, the requirements of the country. It is believed that the Way is achievable only as a result of one’s being educated and through the process of cultivating and perfecting one’s moral character and integrity. In broader interpretations, 道is the Law of Heaven and Earth, the Way of all things or the general truths of the world.
vi This同in 天下来同would be an obvious reference to 大同(spelt Da-Tong in Pinyin), the Confucian ideal of perfect society in which the State exists for the people and people enjoy universal equality, to mention a few of the visions embodied in the term. In the Taoist classics, this refers to the way of individual life that is brought into perfect harmony with the universe or nature, as a result of following the Tao.
