Many Americans feel that over-praising a child can have the oppositive of the desired effect.

許多老美認為過份誇獎孩子會適得其反。

American teachers and parents pay much attention to children's character development and daily-life education.

美國老師和父母非常重視孩子的性格發展和日常生活教育。

One of the purposes of American education is to provide everyone with the opportunity to learn how best he/she may serve the country.

美國教育目的之一就是要提供每個人機會學習如何最好服務於國家。

Americans put more emphasis on the three Rs in elementary education.

老美重視小學教育裡三個基本技能:閱讀、作文和算術。

(three Rs = reading, writing and arithmetic = three basic skills)

Home schooling and home-schoolers have increased; many parents wonder if their children should be home-schooled.

在家上學和在家上課學生已有增加;許多父母不曉得是否應該讓孩子在家上學。

(Home schooling 是指一些老美認為目前正式學校不「理想」,所以把孩子留在家裡上課,由父母自己擔任多種課程的教學。而後參加考試,取得畢業文憑。)

Many American feel that straight A's in school are only a part of children's education.

許多老美認為在校全A成績,只是兒童教育的一部分。

Serving society, helping others and obeying the laws have always been major parts of American general education.

How to get along with other people and how to work as a team player have become an important part of American general education.

如何與他人相處和彼此通力合作,成為美國一般教育的重要部分。

It seems odd to the Chinese that American special education includes gifted/talented students and physical/mental handicapped ones; they are all called “exceptional students.”

對老中也許奇怪的是,美國特別教育包括資優學生和身智障礙學生;他們統稱為「特殊學生」。

(exceptional這個字,含有 high side和low side兩方面,比較好聽,人們可以接受的字眼)

為了加強身障和正常學生融合一起以及沖淡優越感,美國一些中學也把畢業的第一、二名取消了。

(mainstream是把身障學生轉入正規班級)

American educational systems do not encourage rote learning and neglect creative thinking.

美國教育制度不鼓勵死記硬背的學習方式,也不忽視創造性的思考。
