Conjunction (连词)

A conjunction is the part of speech (词类) that joins (连接) words, phrases or clauses, e.g. AND, BECAUSE, IF, BEFORE, AFTER, THAT, ALTHOUGH, WHEN, etc. Students often fail (不能) to use a conjunction at the right time (适当时候) or use it incorrectly (错误地).

WRONG: I like him, he is kind. (A comma (逗号) cannot be used to join two clauses.)

CORRECT: I like him because he is kind.

WRONG: He wanted to spend (花费) half (一半) of the money, save (储蓄) the other half (另一半).

CORRECT: He wanted to spend half of the money and save the other half.

WRONG: He is a thief has not been proved (证实). (`Is' and `has' belong to (属於) two different (不同的) clauses. There should be (应该有) a conjunction to join them.)

CORRECT: It has not been proved that he is a thief. (For this kind of clause used as the subject (作主词用的子句), we usually use `it' to begin (开始) the sentence and put the that-clause at the end (结尾). `That' is a conjunction here.)

WRONG: I regret (抱歉) to tell you that your application (申请) for the job (工作) which has not been successful (成功).

CORRECT: I regret to tell you that your application for the job has not been successful. (`That' is a conjunction. `Which' is not needed (需要) here.)

WRONG: I felt like I could not breathe (呼吸). (`Like' is not a conjunction.)

CORRECT: I felt as if (好像) I could not breathe.

WRONG: During () she stayed (逗留) with us, she was very talkative (多言).

CORRECT: When she stayed with us, she was very talkative. (`During' is not a conjunction.)

WRONG: After he went home. He went to bed (睡觉) at once (立即). (A conjunction cannot be used with one clause.)

CORRECT: After he went home, he went to bed at once. (The conjunction `after' joins the two clauses.)

WRONG: Although he failed (不及格) in the examination (考试), but he was happy. (`Although' and `but' are conjunctions doing the same job (作用相同) in the sentence.)

CORRECT: Although he failed in the examination, he was happy.

CORRECT: He failed in the examination, but he was happy.

WRONG: I asked () him that why (为什么) he was crying (哭著).

CORRECT: I asked him why he was crying. (Here `why' and `that' are both (同样) conjunctions. `That' is not needed here.)

Students should be particularly (特别) careful (小心) with pairs (配对) of words acting (作用) as conjunctions:

WRONG: She neither (既不) was at home nor (也不) in the library (图书馆).

CORRECT: She was neither at home nor in the library. (`Was' should go before `neither' because it governs (约束) both the `home' and the `library'.)

WRONG: He blamed (责备) not only (不单) me, but also (更加) called me a fool (说我是傻子).

CORRECT: He not only blamed me, but also called me a fool. (Here `blamed' only governs the first (第一个) clause because `called' governs the second (第二个) clause, so (所以) it should be put after `not only'.)
