Evolution has made us more advanced in many ways – but it could also be responsible for back pain, research suggests.

Some people's spines are less well adapted for walking upright, scientists said.

They found that those who suffered from disc problems tended to have spines that were closer in shape to those of chimpanzees, who mostly move around on all fours.

This suggests their vertebrae – the bones in the spine – may be less able to withstand the strain caused by walking on two feet.

It is the first study to look in detail at why humans suffer back pain more often than other primates. The team of researchers, from Scotland, Canada and Iceland, compared 141 human vertebrae, 56 chimpanzee vertebrae, and 27 orangutan vertebrae and found significant differences in their shape.

Human vertebrae with bumps called Schmorl's nodes – a sign of disc problems – were closer in shape to chimpanzee vertebrae than human bones without the bumps.

In fact, they tended to have 'a shape that is statistically indistinguishable from chimpanzee vertebrae', said Dr Kimberly Plomp, of Canada's Simon Fraser University.

This implies that those with spines more similarly shaped to chimpanzees, our closest primate relatives, are more likely to have disc problems. Professor Mark Collard, of Aberdeen University, said yesterday: 'Our vertebrae would have changed as we evolved from using four legs to using two legs.

'However, evolution is not perfect and some vertebral characteristics, such as the ones we identified as being similar to chimpanzees, may have remained within the human 'blueprint' and result in some people having vertebrae that are less able to withstand the pressures of walking [on two feet].'

Dr Plomp said the findings, published in the journal BMC Evolutionary Biology, 'indicate why some individuals are more prone to back problems', adding: 'This may help in preventative care by identifying individuals, such as athletes, who may be at risk.' The team plan to investigate the role of vertebrae shape in other spinal diseases, such as osteoarthritis.
