Progress is the activity of today and the assurance of tomorrow.(进步是今天的活动、明天的保证.)

   Members of the Harvard Family Here in the Yard is one of the great collections of intellectual talent in the world. For what purpose? There is no question that the faculty, the alumni, the students, and the benefactors of Harvard have used their power to improve the lives of people here and around the world. But can we do more? Can Harvard dedicate its intellect to improving the lives of people who will never even hear its name?
* Harvard Family:
* intellectual: 有智力的, 有智慧的. 作为名词是: 知识分子
* what purpose: 什么目的? 再学一个: on purpose: 故意
* there is no question: 毋庸置疑, 毫无疑问.
* faculty: 大学里的教职员工总称.
* alumni: 毕业生.
* benefactor: 资助者
* dedicate: 献出, 贡献. 名词是dedication. dedicate to后面要加名词或者动名词

   Let me make a request of the deans and the professors - the intellectual leaders here at Harvard. As you hire new faculty, award tenure, review curriculum, and determine degree requirements, please ask yourselves: Should our best minds be more dedicated to solving our biggest problems? Should Harvard encourage its faculty to take on the world's worst inequities? Should Harvard students know about the depth of global poverty, the prevalence of world hunger, the scarcity of clean water, the girls kept out of school, the children who die from diseases we can cure? Should the world's most privileged learn about the lives of the world's least privileged? These are not rhetorical questions - you will answer with your policies.
* request: 请求, 动词和名词都可以.
* dean: 校长, 院长
* intellectual leaders: 智力精英
* hire: 雇用.
* tenure: 占有, 这里指的是终身职位.
* curriculum: 课程, 通常指的是大学里所有的课程.
* degree requirements: 学位要求
* best minds: 最优秀人才
* be dedicated to: 贡献于
* take on: 这里指的是承担,接受挑战,致力于解决...
* global poverty: 世界性的贫困
* prevalence: 流行, 如:prevalence survey:现患调查,流行病调查
* scarcity: shortage, 短缺。波波,我是这么记住这个单词的;一个伤疤(scar)在美丽的城市(city)脸上,美中不足啊!不过这里scarcity的“ar”念成“air”的音。
* clean water: 清洁水。
* keep out of: 排除之外,置身于外
* the most privileged: 最有权力的,最有特权的,最优越的
* the least privileged: 最贫困的,最没有权力的。
波波:I belong to the least privileged.
安迪:So do I.

   My mother, who was filled with pride the day I was admitted here - never stopped pressing me to do more for others. A few days before I was married, she hosted a bridal event, at which she read aloud a letter about marriage that she had written to Melinda. My mother was very ill with cancer at the time, but she saw one more opportunity to deliver her message, and at the close of the letter she said: From those to whom much is given, much is expected.
* be filled with pride: 引以为豪,充满自豪
* be admitted: 被录取
* press sb.to do sth: force sb.to do sth, 强迫某人做某事,督促某人做某事
* bridal event: 新娘仪式。相当于我国的迎娶新娘。米米,什么时候安迪给你主持bridal event?
* write to: 写信. 后面一般加人名。在英语里很少说write letter to sb.
* be ill with + disease: 因为生...而病得不轻
* deliver: 传达,传播,送货。再学一个:deliver a speech (发表演说)。
* at the close of the letter: 在信的结尾

   When you consider what those of us here in this Yard have been given - in talent, privilege, and opportunity - there is almost no limit to what the world has a right to expect from us.
* consider: to think carefully about,仔细考虑
* no limit: 无限制
* expect from sb.: 从某人处期待

   In line with the promise of this age, I want to exhort each of the graduates here to take on an issue - a complex problem, a deep inequity, and become a specialist on it. If you make it the focus of your career, that would be phenomenal. But you don't have to do that to make an impact. For a few hours every week, you can use the growing power of the Internet to get

informed, find others with the same interests, see the barriers, and find ways to cut through them.
* in line with: 符合,配合
* exhort: 力劝
* take on: 接纳
* specialist: an expert in one field. 专家
* focus: 焦点,盖茨这里意思是成为事业的核心。
* phenomenal: 现象的,这里是杰出的,显著的意思。
* make an impact: 作出影响
* to get informed: to get information, 得到信息
* with the same interests: 有同样爱好
* barrier: 障碍,困难
* cut through: 原意抄近路,这里指的是解决

   Don't let complexity stop you. Be activists. Take on big inequities. I feel sure it will be one of the great experiences of your lives.

   You graduates are coming of age in an amazing time. As you leave Harvard, you have technology that members of my class never had. You have awareness of global inequity, which we did not have. And with that awareness, you likely also have an informed conscience that will torment you if you abandon these people whose lives you could change with modest effort. You have more than we had; you must start sooner, and carry on longer.
   Knowing what you know, how could you not?
* amazing time: 伟大时代
* awareness of: 意识到
* informed conscience: 良心谴责
* torment: physical pain or mental anguish,折磨
* abandon: 抛弃,遗弃。米米,你怎么abandon安迪了?
* modest effort: 少许的努力
* carry on: 坚持下去

   And I hope you will come back here to Harvard 30 years from now and reflect on what you have done with your talent and your energy. I hope you will judge yourselves not on your professional accomplishments alone, but also on how well you have addressed the world's deepest inequities ... on how well you treated people a world away who have nothing in common with you but their humanity.
   Good luck.
* reflect on: 思考,反省
* professional accomplishments: 专业成就
* address: 地址,演讲, 这里指的是:To direct the efforts or attention of,致力于
* a world away: 相隔千山万水。
* humanity: 人类。下面这些单词也马上记住:human:人类的。human being:人类。 humankind:人类。humanize:赋予人性。 humanism:人道主义。humanitarian:人道主义者。波波,你今天有没有背200个单词?

1. In formal education, a curriculum (plural curricula) is the set of courses, and their content, offered at a school or university.
2. We should always ask ourselves: What have I accomplished so far? What do I still want to accomplish?
3. In the coming decades, we'll have astonishing new abilities: better software, better diagnosis for illness, better cures, better education, better opportunities and more brilliant minds coming up with ideas that solve tough problems.
4. The great advances in the world have often aggravated the inequities in the world. The least needy see the most improvement, and the most needy get the least -- in particular the billion people who live on less than a dollar a day.
5. If we can spend the early decades of the 21st century finding approaches that meet the needs of the poor in ways that generate profits and recognition for business, we will have found a sustainable way to reduce poverty in the world.
