A Message to Garcia
In all this Cuban business there is one man
stands out on the horizon of my memory like Mars at perihelion.
When war broke out between Spain and the United States, it was very
necessary to communicate quickly with the leader of the Insurgents.
Garcia was somewhere in the mountain vastness of Cuba -- no one
knew where. No mail nor telegraph message could reach him. The
President must secure his cooperation, and quickly.
What to do﹖
Someone said to the President, “There’s a fellow
by the name of Rowan will find Garcia for you, if anybody
can.”
Rowan was sent for and given a letter to be
delivered to Garcia. How “the fellow by the name of Rowan” took the
letter, sealed it up in an oil-skin pouch, strapped it over his
heart, in four days landed by night off the coast of Cuba from an
open boat, disappeared into the jungle, and in three weeks came out
on the other side of the Island, having traversed a hostile country
on foot, and delivered his letter to Garcia, are things I have no
special desire now to tell in detail.
致加西亚的信

●解释
* Cuban: 古巴的, 这个国家叫Cuba,
首都Havana, 以生产Cigar著称.
* stands out on the horizon of my memory: 在我记忆的地平线, 也就是难以忘怀.
* Mars: 火星
* perihelion: 近日点, 是一个天文的术语, Sam, 你是不是觉得学习英语是一辈子的事呢?
* break out: (战争)爆发
* be necessary to: 有必要. 注意necessary的拼写, 多拼几次了.
* communicate with: 和...沟通(交流, 联系)
* insurgent: 这里做名词, 意思起义军.
* mountain vastness: 崇山峻岭
* no mail nor telegraph message could reach him: 邮件和电报都到不了他手里,
也可以用neither...nor的结构.
* president: 总统, 校长, 董事长, 总裁等等
* secure: 安全的, 可靠的, 这里做动词:确保, 意思是美国总统要确保他能和加西亚合作.
* cooperation: 合作. 比如: 谢谢合作, 英文就是: Thanks for your
cooperation.
* what to do: 怎么办? 同样的句型还有Where to go? How to do?
* fellow: person, 人, 员, 如研究员, 我们可以用research fellow.
* by the name of: named, 叫...名字的
* if anybody can: 这里意思如果有人能胜任的话.
* sent: send的过去式和过去分词。 阿迪在学习英语的时候, 老是把send和sent的原型搞错, 后来我是这么记忆的,
字母d比t排列更前面, 当然是原型. 那么be sent for: 被送来, 也就是他们把Rowen找来.
* deliver: 送(信, 货物等), 在商务英语里还有可以同义词: ship.
* seal: 封缄, 以前有一个老歌叫seal with a kiss(以吻封缄), 作为名词还有"图章"的意思.
* oil-skin pouch: 油皮纸袋.
* strap: 用带缚住, 用带捆扎.
* land: 这里作动词, 意思登陆.
* off the coast: 一般我们在沿海岸线可以用介词off.
* open boat: 小船, 通常没有甲板.
* disappear: 消失
* jungle: 丛林
* come out: 出来
* the other side of: 在另一端
* traverse: 横跨
* hostile: 敌对的
* desire: 欲望, 这里指的是兴趣.
* in detail: 详细
